To teach English online to adults you need a platform that serves working learners, a lesson style built around their goals, and usually a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours. Adults are the best paid online market because professionals buy outcomes, from a promotion to an IELTS band, and the platforms that serve them, from Preply to Twenix and Lingoda, pay or let you charge accordingly.

Most people picture online English teaching as children on a cartoon background, but the money and the stability are in adults. A Spanish sales manager who needs to present in English, a Korean engineer preparing for a speaking assessment, a Brazilian nurse working towards an exam, a Japanese office worker who wants to stop freezing on calls: these learners pay more per hour, book the same slot every week, and tell you exactly what they need. This guide, written for South African and American teachers, sets out which platforms serve adults, what they ask for, what they publish about pay, and which certificate puts you in front of the learners who pay most. Platform figures were taken from each company’s own tutor page or listing on the dates shown and converted at the European Central Bank reference rates of 6 November 2026. For the full comparison of qualifications across every platform, start with our guide to the best TEFL certification to teach English online; this page is its chapter on adult learners.

Key takeaways

  • The adult market splits into conversation practice, business English, exam preparation and academic English, and the price rises in that order: roughly US$10 an hour for conversation on a fixed rate platform, US$20 to US$40 for business and exam work with your own clients.
  • Preply and italki let you set your own price for adult lessons and take 15 to 33 percent; Cambly pays a fixed US$10.20 an hour (about R169) and needs no certificate.
  • Twenix supplies Spanish and Italian professionals for 26 minute classes with no minimum hours; Lingoda wants a certificate and two to three years’ experience; Open English hires native speakers from North America for Latin American adults.
  • Adults expect a teacher who can diagnose, plan and measure, which is what a TEFL certificate trains, and the business and exam niches are where an Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma earns its price.
  • Adult demand follows the working day in the student’s country, so European adults fill a South African’s morning and an American’s early morning, while Asian adults fill the afternoon and the evening.
  • A 30-hour business English course is the single most useful add on for adult work, because it names the thing most adult learners are buying.

Which platforms let you teach English online to adults?

The platforms that let you teach English online to adults fall into two groups: marketplaces where adults choose you from a profile and you set the price, and schools that assign adult students to your slots and set the rate. The table shows the main ones, who their adults are, and what each published when we checked.

Platforms for teaching English online to adults: students, requirements and published pay (checked on each platform’s own tutor page or listing on the dates shown; figures approximate; conversions at ECB reference rates of 6 November 2026)
Platform Adult students What it asks for How pay works Checked
Preply Adults worldwide, strong in Europe, Latin America and Asia No certificate or experience required; a profile and video You set the hourly price; 100 percent commission on a trial, then 33 percent falling to 18 percent after 400 hours taught 6 Nov 2026
italki Adults worldwide Community tutor: no certificate; professional teacher: a teaching qualification You set the price; about 21 percent on single lessons, 15 to 19 percent on packages, 0 percent on trials 17 Sep 2026
Cambly Adults worldwide, conversation practice Native English speaker, 18 or over, no certificate or degree US$0.17 per active minute, US$10.20 an hour (about R169); Cambly Pro US$15 an hour 6 Nov 2026
Twenix Professionals in Spain and Italy, 26 minute classes Fluent English, registered as a freelancer where you live; TEFL helpful, no degree; no minimum hours Set by country of residence; students assigned to your slots; not published on the listing 6 Nov 2026
Lingoda Adults, mainly in Europe, small group and private classes C2 English, a teaching certificate, 2 to 3 years’ experience Not published 17 Sep 2026
Open English Adults in Latin America Native speakers from North America; 10 to 26 hours a week; TEFL and degree preferred Not published 6 Nov 2026
Engoo (DMM Eikaiwa) Mostly Japanese adults 18 or over, proficient in English, headset and webcam Not published on the tutor page 17 Sep 2026
Ringle Korean professionals, 20 or 40 minute lessons Native level English; current students and graduates of leading universities Headline US$17 to US$22 an hour (about R281 to R364) 6 Nov 2026
Cafetalk Adults in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China Native or near native speaker with a teaching certificate You set the price in yen points; Cafetalk’s fee falls as you teach more 6 Nov 2026
AmazingTalker Adults, strong in Taiwan and East Asia Relevant teaching experience or a language teaching certificate You set the price with no upper limit; a variable service fee, as low as 0 percent by its own description 17 Sep 2026

Notice where the published numbers sit. The fixed rates cluster around US$10 an hour, the one platform publishing above that recruits from a closed pool, and everything else is either unpublished or set by you. For adult work, that last category is the point: the earning ceiling is your price, your niche and your reviews, and a certificate is what lets you set a price with a straight face.

Why do adults pay more for online English lessons than children?

Octavio Frias de Oliveira bridge in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where working adults book online English lessons for careers and exams

Adults pay more because they are buying something specific and they are paying with their own money. A parent buying a child’s lesson is buying a habit; an adult buying a lesson is buying a promotion, a visa, a university place or the ability to run a meeting without dread, and those have a price attached that a 25 minute conversation does not. The tutor who can get a Brazilian doctor through an English proficiency exam is worth more per hour than the tutor who chats, and the market prices it that way.

The second reason is that adults are organised. They book regular slots, pay for packages, show up on time and give feedback, which means a tutor with eight adult regulars has a timetable rather than a lottery. The third is scarcity. Plenty of teachers are comfortable with children and general conversation; far fewer can teach a negotiation role play, mark an IELTS writing task against the band descriptors, or explain the difference between a conditional in a contract and one in a text message. The adult niches that pay best are the ones that need training, and our 30 Hour Teaching Business English course exists because business English is the largest of them.

What qualification do you need to teach adults online?

You need a 120-hour TEFL certificate for most adult platforms and for any adult who is paying a serious hourly rate, and a Level 5 TEFL Diploma for the business, exam and academic work at the top of the market. Cambly and Preply will let you start without one, but neither is where adult teaching pays. Lingoda requires a certificate and experience. Cafetalk and italki’s professional tier require a qualification. Twenix calls a certificate helpful. And a Spanish marketing director comparing Preply profiles will pay more for the one that shows a verifiable qualification and a business English specialism than for a friendly face.

The 120-hour TEFL certificate covers what adults notice: needs analysis, lesson planning, grammar you can explain rather than just use, and error correction that respects an adult’s dignity. The Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma adds depth, a regulated qualification number an employer can check, and standing at the same RQF level as a CELTA, which is what corporate clients and language schools recognise when they contract online teachers. Add a specialism to either: business English for the corporate market, IELTS preparation for the exam market, and our Specialist Course Bundle packages both with young learners and teaching online. If you want the teaching methods rather than the platforms, our guide to how to teach English to adults covers needs analysis, motivation and lesson shape in detail.

What do adult learners want from an online English teacher?

Adult learners want a teacher who finds out what they need in the first ten minutes, builds lessons around it, and shows them progress they can feel. Start with a needs analysis, even on a marketplace trial: what do you use English for, what went wrong last week, what is the deadline. Adults respect a tutor who asks those questions and distrust one who opens a generic worksheet.

Then teach to the goal. A professional who needs to run meetings wants functional language for interrupting, summarising and disagreeing politely, practised in role play, with feedback in writing afterwards. An exam candidate wants timed tasks, model answers and a clear account of what the examiner rewards. A conversation learner wants fluency, which means you talk less, correct after rather than during, and recycle the vocabulary from last week. Across all of them, adults want punctuality, a stable connection and a tutor who remembers what they said. Warm ups still matter, and our ESL games for adults are written for grown ups who do not want to be treated like a class of ten year olds.

How much can you earn teaching English online to adults?

You can earn about US$10 an hour teaching adults on a fixed rate conversation platform, US$17 to US$22 on Ringle if you fit its university rule, and US$20 to US$40 an hour on business English, exam preparation and private clients once you have a niche and reviews, less the marketplace commission. The last figure is what tutors commonly set on Preply, italki and Cafetalk for specialised adult work, not a platform guarantee, and new tutors usually start well below it to win their first students.

Commission changes the picture more than the headline rate. A new Preply tutor charging US$20 keeps US$13.40 after the 33 percent starting commission, and about US$16.40 once 400 hours are taught and the rate falls to 18 percent. On italki the same lesson keeps about US$15.80 as a single booking and more in a package. In rand, US$20 is about R331 at November 2026 rates, so a South African tutor with twelve hours a week of adult students at that price is looking at roughly R11,500 to R14,000 a month after commission and before tax, depending on the commission tier, and the same timetable at US$30 adds about half again. For an American the equivalent is about US$700 to US$1,300 a month at twelve hours a week across those two prices, which is a meaningful second income and, at twenty five hours a week of business clients, a first one. When do adult learners book online lessons, in South African and American time?

Duomo di Milano at dusk, in the Italian business capital where professionals book 26 minute online English classes around the working day

Adult learners book around their working day, so the question is which working day you want to serve. European professionals, the Twenix and Lingoda market, book early morning, lunchtime and early evening in Central European Time, which in November is one hour behind South Africa and six hours ahead of the US east coast. A Spanish 8 am class is 9 am in Johannesburg and 2 am in New York; a Madrid 7 pm class is 8 pm in Johannesburg and 1 pm in New York. For a South African, Europe is almost a local timetable. For an American, the European lunchtime and evening fall between 7 am and 2 pm Eastern, which is a comfortable working morning.

Asian adults book the other way round. Korean and Japanese evenings run roughly 7 pm to midnight local time, which is 12 noon to 5 pm in South Africa and 5 am to 10 am on the US east coast. Latin American adults, the Open English market, keep roughly American hours, with evening demand from 6 pm to 11 pm Eastern. The practical conclusion is that a South African can build a full adult timetable from a European morning and an Asian afternoon without working nights, and an American can do the same from an Asian early morning and a Latin American evening.

How do you find your first adult students online?

You find your first adult students by choosing one niche, writing a profile that names it, pricing slightly below the going rate for a month, and converting trials into packages. A profile that says business English for Spanish speaking professionals, or IELTS speaking and writing, will be found by the people searching for it; a profile that says friendly, patient teacher of all levels will be found by nobody. Put your qualification name and number near the top, record a two minute video speaking at the speed you would teach at, and set availability in the windows your niche actually books.

On the schools, the first month is about reliability. Twenix assigns students to the slots you open, so open plenty and never miss one. Lingoda and Open English schedule you weekly. On the marketplaces, ask every satisfied adult for a review and offer a package after the second lesson, because adults buy packages and packages are what make the income predictable. The equipment and payment setup is on our page about teaching English online, and if you are weighing the whole venture before you start, our honest look at whether teaching English online is worth it runs the numbers for both countries.

FAQs

Questions students ask us

It depends on whether you want students supplied or a price you set. Preply, italki and Cafetalk let adults choose you and let you set the rate. Twenix, Lingoda and Open English assign adult students to your slots and set the terms. Cambly is the easiest to join and pays a fixed US$10.20 an hour for adult conversation.

A 120-hour TEFL certificate for most adult platforms and for any adult paying a serious hourly rate, and an Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma for business, exam and academic work at the top of the market. Lingoda, Cafetalk and italki’s professional tier require a qualification; Cambly and Preply do not, but neither is where adult teaching pays.

About US$10 an hour on a fixed rate conversation platform, US$17 to US$22 on Ringle if you fit its university rule, and US$20 to US$40 an hour for business English, exam preparation and private clients once you have a niche and reviews, less commission of 15 to 33 percent on the marketplaces. The higher figures are tutor-set prices, not guarantees.

Because adults are buying a specific outcome with their own money, such as a promotion, a visa or an exam band, and because the skills that deliver it, business role play, exam marking and needs analysis, are scarcer than general conversation. Adults also book regular slots and packages, which makes a tutor’s income predictable.

Around their own working day. European professionals book early morning, lunchtime and early evening Central European Time, which is close to a South African timetable and a US east coast morning. Korean and Japanese adults book 7 pm to midnight local time, which is a South African afternoon and a US early morning. Latin American adults keep roughly US hours.

Yes, it is the single most useful add on for adult work, because business English is the largest adult niche and the one corporate clients and platforms such as Twenix and Lingoda serve. A 30-hour business English course on your profile names what most adult learners are buying, and it is what justifies a higher rate than general conversation.
