Teach English in Cyprus
TEFL jobs in Cyprus
You can teach English in Cyprus at private schools, private language institutes (frontistiria), summer schools and with private students, mainly in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. Cyprus is a small but steady market, and because English is widely spoken, most work is exam preparation for children and teenagers. EU citizens can work freely, while non EU teachers need an employer-sponsored work and residence permit. The national minimum wage is €979 gross a month on hiring and €1,088 after six months with the same employer, from 1 January 2026.

Why teach English in Cyprus?
Cyprus sits in the eastern Mediterranean, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, beaches, mountain villages and archaeological sites dating back thousands of years. It is an EU member that uses the euro, English is widely spoken thanks to its history as a British colony, and daily life is relaxed and safe. Cypriots are warm and welcoming, and the island makes an easy base for travel around the region.
What kinds of English teaching jobs are there in Cyprus?
Private language institutes. The main employers for TEFL teachers. Known locally as frontistiria, they teach children and teenagers after school, mostly preparing them for Cambridge, IELTS and other English exams. Classes usually run in the afternoons and evenings.
Private and international schools. Nicosia and Limassol have private English-medium schools following British curricula. They want qualified teachers with a teaching licence such as a PGCE and offer the most stable contracts.
State schools. Cypriot public schools employ teachers appointed through the Greek Cypriot system, so they are effectively closed to foreign TEFL teachers.
Summer schools. Seasonal English courses and camps run in the summer, a good way to gain experience in Cyprus.
Private tutoring. Popular for exam preparation, but check that your employer and your permit allow outside work, and declare your income for tax.
How much do English teachers earn in Cyprus?
Private institutes often pay by the hour, and private schools pay monthly salaries, with qualified teachers earning the most. Cyprus introduced a national minimum wage in 2023, and a new decree from 1 January 2026 sets it at €979 gross a month on hiring and €1,088 after six months’ continuous employment with the same employer, valid until the end of 2027. Rents in Limassol in particular have risen sharply, so check your hours and pay carefully. Compare pay across countries on the TEFL Salary Index, or read how much TEFL teachers make.
When and where should you look for teaching jobs in Cyprus?
Most vacancies are advertised in late summer for the September start, and summer schools recruit in spring, so apply by June. Some jobs come up during the year. Employers often interview online first but like to meet candidates in person and may ask for a demonstration lesson. Search job boards, contact institutes directly in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos, and consider specialist recruitment agencies.
What qualifications do you need to teach English in Cyprus?
Most employers expect a degree and a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours, and exam preparation experience is a real advantage. Private schools usually want a teaching qualification from your home country, and universities a master’s degree. An Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma helps you stand out, and it can be verified on the Ofqual register.
Which visa do you need to teach English in Cyprus?
The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member, so EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, including Irish passport holders, can live and work there freely and register their residence. UK citizens lost that right after Brexit, unless covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. Non EU teachers need a job offer and an employer-sponsored work and residence permit, issued through the Civil Registry and Migration Department, and the employer may need to show the job could not be filled locally. The north of the island is administered separately and has different rules. Check current requirements with your employer and our Visa Desk.
What is classroom culture like in Cyprus?
Classes are usually small, and students are respectful and motivated, especially those preparing for exams. Classrooms are organised, and students may address you by your title or first name, so set the boundary you prefer. Dress smart casual for work. Cyprus is relaxed, but modest dress is expected when visiting churches and monasteries. Learning some Greek helps with daily life outside the cities.

Living costs
Cyprus sits in the middle of the EU cost table, but rent varies enormously between cities. Limassol, with its international business community, is by far the most expensive, while Nicosia is the most affordable of the main cities and Larnaca and Paphos fall in between. Rent is the biggest cost, and in Limassol it can take most of a modest salary, so check pay against local rents before you accept a job.
Standard leases run for 12 months, usually with a two month deposit plus a month upfront, and agents may charge a fee. Summer air conditioning pushes up electricity bills, while public transport is cheap but limited, so many people use a car.
All figures below are in euros and are typical 2026 rental and price data, checked on 3 October 2026. Prices change, so check a current source before you budget.
