Grammar can change the entire meaning of a sentence. Understanding the use of nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives will help you to be able to teach your students how to read and write better. You might be a native English speaker and are very confident in your grasp of the rules of the language, but are you confident enough to teach it? Do you remember everything you were taught as a student so that you can answer correctly when you are asked a grammatical question?
This 30-hour course will give you the grammar refresher you need, including word and sentence formation and different tenses. It will make you a better English teacher, and you may surprise yourself and learn something.

Advanced Grammar for English Teachers

Module One: How are Words Formed?

Do you ever think about how words or parts of words can be joined together to change the meaning or to make brand-new words? Learn how words enter the English language and how they change over time so that you can share this knowledge with your students.

Module Two: How to Arrange Words into Sentences

Did you know that there are around 171,000 words in the English language? Don’t worry; you’ll only be asked to teach a few hundred of those! In this module, you will learn about building words into sentences and be ready to help students to create their own grammatically correct statements, whether they are simple, compound or complex.

Module Three: Time to Talk Tenses

Were you taught that there were three tenses: Past, Present and Future? Would it surprise you to know that there are, in fact, 12 (or 13, depending on who you ask) tenses in the English language? Spend time getting to grips with this valuable aspect of language teaching skills. Your future-teacher-self (and students) will thank you for it.

Module Four: How to Teach Advanced Grammar

Many entry-level TEFL jobs want you to focus on conversational English teaching. This is a great way to get first-time experience as a teacher, and it usually means less time spent on grammatical theory. But, there will come a time when you want to boost your earning power and be hired to know your present continuous from your present simple tense. And be able to explain it well to students. By the end of this module, you will be confident in your grammar teaching skills, plus have access to a long list of ready-to-roll activities for your grammar classes.

Highfields Qualifications

The TEFL Institute’s Level 5 accrediting body is the  (Highfield Qualifications). This qualification is aimed at those with little or no experience teaching English or those with previous experience seeking a recognised qualification to validate their knowledge. This qualification provides learners with a certificate recognised worldwide and can be used to secure teaching positions, visas and other employment related to English language teaching. The Vital Consular:

What is this verification seal, and why is it different to an accreditation?   • WHAT IS TEFL?

    TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It is primarily teaching non-native speakers English without the use of translation. This means you won’t need to know their first language. TEFL teachers will need the knowledge and know-how of the methodologies to teach this way. This is why teachers must first complete a TEFL course and gain the qualification. TEFL is widely used to teach English online in one-to-one or small group scenarios or to teach English abroad and is sometimes even used as an easier way to travel.
  • WHO CAN DO A TEFL COURSE?

    First and foremost, aspiring TEFL teachers must be outgoing and confident, and not afraid to make themselves look a little silly, especially when teaching children. Expression is a huge part of the methodologies to get your point across. You’ll warm up to this in time, and it all takes practice.

    We suggest people be at least 17 with a C1 level of English or higher. If you’re not sure, we have a free English test. We also would recommend people who work on their own initiative as it is an online course and you will need to be your own motivation.
  • WHAT DO I NEED TO TEACH ONLINE?

    If you have no experience in teaching online, a good idea is to get some teaching practice in, as they may ask for “experience” hours, which are unpaid. You can alternatively complete our 10-hour Methodologies course, which has a section focused on teaching English online.

    Most online companies will ask for your TEFL certificate, teaching practice, accessibility to good WiFi, a laptop or other computer devices, and headphones. Some online companies may ask their teachers also to have a Bachelor’s Degree. This is evident in Chinese online companies, as it is a government regulation (no matter where you live).
  • HOW ARE THE COURSES LAID OUT?

    Our courses contain content, videos, podcasts, reflective tasks, and tests. They are online courses and can be completed independently and from home.

    Our specialist courses are much shorter than the main TEFL qualifications. They are all completed online and in your own time. All tests are done online and corrected instantly. They have course content and tests throughout the course. They can be completed before or after the main TEFL qualification.
  • ARE THE COURSES ACCREDITED?

    The TEFL Institute is fully accredited by ACDL. Our 180-hour Level OFQUAL regulates 5 TEFL courses.

I have recently completed the 180-hour Level 5 Diploma withPremier TEFL and highly recommend it to anyone about to start their TEFL journey. The course is well-structured and highly informative with especially great sections on teaching methodologies, phonology and grammar. I have been doing the TEFL diploma course for the past couple of months and it has been eye opening. I am a native English speaker but had no idea the process of learning English in such a different way. It has not only been one of the best undertakings of my life but also one of the most rewarding. Let me tell you its a lot of work. You really need to commit yourself to the study aspect of it as there is much ground to cover. The layout of the course is fantastic and really helps you to understand what's required of you as a student. I'm still studying as I have other parts of the diploma course to complete . Remember to manage your time as its important that you really study the modules set out for you. The assessments require a lot of attention and your answers need to reflect your knowledge. It has opened my eyes to the challenges faced by non native English speakers as I a native English speaker found the course difficult but manageable. English has so many layers to it so again commit your time to studying, you won't regret it. One of the best courses I have ever done and the staff are always on hand to help if ever you need it. Best of luck to anyone starting on this journey.
