30 hour Teaching Young Learners Course

Module One: How to Make Sense of Teacher/Learner Needs

Understanding your students’ language abilities and why they want to learn English. Get to know the basic principles behind teaching younger learners and teens.

Module Two: Understand Your Responsibilities as a Young Learners Teacher

Classroom routines are important in any good classroom but for younger learners it is vital to have structure and consistency. Learn classroom management techniques that will eliminate the chaos and make your lessons run smoothly.

Module Three: How to Teach Grammar and Vocabulary

Did you know that we say about 7,500 words on an average day? Don’t worry you will only be asked to teach your young learners a few hundred of these. From beginner vocab like HELLO and GOODBYE you’ll study the tools to teach vocabulary and use them effectively so that your students can use it in the right context.

By the end of this module, you’ll also know your present continuous from your present simple tense. Most of all, you’ll be familiar and confident with grammatical terms.

Module Four: How to Teach Reaching & Listening Skills

These are called ‘Receptive skills’ because the student is receiving language. By the end of this lesson, you’ll know the most effective ways to engage students in reading English and how to write it. This includes setting listening tasks to music, audio stories and recordings, to reading articles, emails, facebook posts both inside and outside the classroom.

Module Five: How to Teach Writing & Speaking Skills

These are called ‘Productive skills’ because students produce language. You’ll learn plenty of  useful ideas about how to get your students up on their feet and chatting to you about favorite superheroes, games or pets. You’ll also get help with how to teach your students to write English – at all levels, from favorite foods, to their hobbies.

  • What is TEFL?

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It is primarily teaching non-native speakers English without the use of translation. This means you won’t need to know their first language. TEFL teachers will need the knowledge and know-how of the methodologies to teach in this way. This is why teachers will first need to complete a TEFL course and gain the qualification. TEFL is widely used to either teach English online in one-to-one or small group scenarios or to teach English abroad and sometimes even used as an easier way to travel.

  • Who can do a TEFL course?

First and foremost, an aspiring TEFL teacher must be outgoing and confident, and not afraid to make themselves look a little silly, especially when teaching children. Expression is a huge part of the methodologies to be able to get your point across. You’ll warm up to this in time and it all takes practice.

We suggest people to be at least 16 with a C1 level of English or higher. If you’re not sure, we have a free English test. We also would recommend people who work on their own initiative as it is an online course and you will need to be your own motivation.

  • What do I need to teach online?

If you have no experience in teaching online, a good idea is to get some teaching practice in as they may ask for “experience” hours, which are unpaid. You can alternatively complete our 10 hour Methodologies course, which has a section focused on teaching English online.

Most online companies will ask for your TEFL certificate, teaching practice, to have accessibility to good WiFi, a laptop or other computer devices, and headphones. Some online companies may ask their teachers to also have a Bachelor’s Degree. This is evident in Chinese online companies, as it is a government regulation (no matter where you are currently living).

  • How are the courses laid out?

Our courses are filled with course content, videos, podcasts, reflective tasks, and tests. They are online courses and can be completed in your own time and from home.

Our specialist courses are much shorter than the main TEFL qualifications. They are all completed online and in your own time. All tests are done online and corrected instantly. They have course content and tests throughout the course. They can be completed before or after the main TEFL qualification.

  • Are the courses accredited?

The TEFL Institute is fully accredited by the TQUK (center number: C000854) and ACDL. Our 180 hour Level 5 TEFL course is regulated by OFQUAL.

  • Is this course completely online? How flexible is this course?

All courses are all done online and no travelling is required for the tests. Except for the 10 hour Virtual training, you can log on at any time. This is to ensure our TEFL courses can be done while working or other studies. There is a 6 month deadline to the courses, but you can contact us for extensions.

My experience in getting a TEFL qualification was unbelievable! I recently completed my 180 hour level 5 qualification and loved every minute of it. The material is really clear and provides clear insight as to how to be a great teacher. Rachel, Katie and Sarah were a huge help throughout the whole process. At any stage when I needed a hand with some of the content, the tutor support team were always willing to help with very short notice.I had been thinking about getting started on the course for ages and it was one of my friends that actually convinced me in the end. If you are thinking about getting started and you're just not sure, just go for it. I can't recommend it enough. A few of my friends got started once I had started the course and they love it too.I am about to start some of the 30 hour specialist courses and am really looking forward to continuing to learn about teaching English with TEFL!!!

I completed the 120-hour accredited TEFL course and I would not look back. I had a great experience from start to finish. From the layout of the course to the professional help available to users. I found the TEFL.ie website easy to navigate around as reading materials and accompanying quizzes were at my fingertips 24/7. This played a huge factor for me as it allowed me to complete the TEFL course outside my college and work hours. I would 100% recommend this course to anyone considering it as it will open opportunities for you with future employment and travel.

I just got done the "live 10 Hour Advanced TEFL Classroom Methodologies webinar course" with teacher Michelle Benson. Such a great course, covering the entire process of teaching basic English online and normal classes in person. Super prepared teacher, Michelle delivers the result. You end up prepared to give your first basic English lesson. From when I started asking for information about the courses until now, my experience with the school has been excellent.

I've done a 190 hour TEFL course, and I have to say that tutor support on this course is just phenomenal. There were a good few questions in the quizzes I was not sure about, and each time I've contacted my tutor Rachel she has helped me to understand what I need to focus and replied exceptionally fast. I've often sent her an email on a weekend or in the evening, and each time Rachel did her best to get back to me asap. I'm very grateful for that, so big shout-out to Rachel. Well deserved 5 stars!!Also many thanks to Katie who helped me to enrol and get my certificate.
