Five predictions for the decade ahead
- AI becomes a standard co-teacher, not a replacement. Planning, assessment and practice co-pilots become normal professional practice by the late 2020s.
- The teacher’s role shifts to facilitator, coach and judgment layer. AI absorbs the repetitive layer; humans keep nuance, motivation and accountability.
- Assessment moves from one-off exams to continuous, AI-assisted, human-reviewed models.
- AI fluency becomes a measurable salary premium for TEFL teachers. Cross-industry data already shows a 56% premium for AI skills.
- Real-time translation will not reduce demand for English learning, and may increase it. Meaning lives in tone, register and trust, not just literal words.
