Teach English in Ukraine

TEFL jobs in Ukraine

Teaching English in Ukraine is not something we recommend planning right now. Russia’s full-scale invasion continues, and as of October 2026 the UK advises against all travel to Crimea and to all regions of Ukraine except some in the west, and against all but essential travel even there, warning that missile and drone strikes also happen in western regions. Travel insurance is usually invalid if you go against official advice. If you want to help Ukrainian learners, the safest options are to teach online or to teach in neighbouring countries such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary.

Is it safe to teach English in Ukraine?

Not at the moment. Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022, continues. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to Crimea, to within 50km of the border with Belarus and to all other regions of Ukraine except some in the west, and against all but essential travel to those western regions. It warns that missile and drone attacks also happen in the west, advises British nationals in high-risk areas to leave if they judge it safe to do so, and says it cannot help people leave the country. Air raid alerts, power cuts and transport disruption are part of daily life. Always read the latest advice from your own government before you decide anything.

What was the English teaching market like in Ukraine?

Before the full-scale invasion, Ukraine had a lively English teaching market. Language schools in Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa and Kharkiv taught children, students and adults, IT companies paid for business English, and universities and NGOs ran English programmes. Demand for English remains strong among Ukrainians for study, work and integration abroad, but most foreign teachers left after 2022.

What qualifications would you need?

Employers have generally asked for a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours. Because the security situation and entry rules can change quickly, confirm everything with the Ukrainian embassy, any employer and your own government’s travel advice if you are ever offered a post. A regulated qualification is useful wherever you teach, and our Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma can be verified on the Ofqual register.

How can you help Ukrainian learners safely?

Online teaching is the safest route. Many Ukrainians, at home and among the millions living abroad, study English online for work, study and life in a new country, though power cuts can disrupt lessons inside Ukraine. Our guide to online English teaching jobs explains who hires and what they pay. Neighbouring EU countries such as Poland host large Ukrainian communities, and teaching there can also mean working with Ukrainian learners.

Where else could you teach in the region?

Poland is Ukraine’s neighbour and one of Europe’s biggest TEFL markets; see our guide to teaching English in Poland. Romania has low living costs and strong demand for business English, covered in our guide to teaching English in Romania. Slovakia and Hungary are also close, with guides to teaching English in Slovakia and teaching English in Hungary.

Living costs

Before thinking about living costs in Ukraine, check whether travel is safe and insurable. While official advice is against travel to almost all of the country, we do not publish a relocation budget, because we do not recommend moving there to teach for now.

For context, daily life in Ukraine is shaped by the war: air raid alerts, power cuts after strikes on energy infrastructure, and disrupted transport. There are no commercial flights, and travel in and out is by road or rail through neighbouring countries.

The points below summarise UK government advice as of October 2026. It changes often, so always read the latest guidance from your own government.

  • Advise against all travel: Crimea, within 50km of the Belarus border, and all regions except some in the west
  • All but essential travel: The western regions not covered above
  • Risk in the west: Missile and drone strikes also happen in western regions
  • Getting there: No commercial flights; entry and exit by road or rail
  • Consular help: The UK government says it cannot help people leave Ukraine
  • Travel insurance: Usually invalid where official advice is against travel
  • Daily life: Power cuts and air raid alerts are part of daily life
  • Safer options: Teach online, or in Poland, Romania, Slovakia or Hungary

TEFL jobs in Ukraine: FAQS

Q:

Is it safe to teach English in Ukraine?

Not at the moment. Russia’s full-scale invasion continues, and the UK government advises against all travel to Crimea, to within 50km of the Belarus border and to all regions of Ukraine except some in the west, and against all but essential travel to those western regions. It warns that missile and drone strikes also happen in the west. Always read the latest advice from your own government.

Teaching online is the safest way. Many Ukrainians, in Ukraine and among the millions living abroad, study English online for work, study and life in a new country, though power cuts can interrupt lessons inside Ukraine. Teaching in neighbouring EU countries such as Poland, which host large Ukrainian communities, can also mean working with Ukrainian learners. Our guide to online English teaching jobs explains who hires.

Usually not. Travel insurance is generally invalid where your government advises against travel, and the UK government says it cannot help people leave Ukraine. Read your policy carefully and check your own government’s advice before making any plans.

Poland, Ukraine’s neighbour, is one of Europe’s biggest TEFL markets; see our guide to teaching English in Poland. Romania has low living costs and strong demand for business English, and Slovakia and Hungary are also close. Our guides to Romania, Slovakia and Hungary explain jobs, pay and visas.

Most language schools in Eastern Europe, and most online employers, ask for an accredited TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours, such as our 120 Hour Advanced TEFL Course, and many prefer a degree. An Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma strengthens applications for better paid roles and is recognised wherever you teach.

Yes. We review this guide when official travel advice changes. When governments no longer advise against travel to the main teaching cities, we will restore full information on jobs, pay, visas and living costs. Until then, we do not publish salary figures or relocation budgets for Ukraine.
