Living costs
Hungary is one of the more affordable countries in the EU, though Budapest rents have risen and now need careful budgeting. Rent is the biggest cost, highest in District V and the central Pest districts and lower in Buda’s residential areas and the outer districts. Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs cost noticeably less.
Public transport is cheap and excellent, with one monthly pass covering the metro, trams and buses, and eating out at local restaurants is good value. Expect a monthly shared building charge on top of rent and higher heating bills in winter.
