Teach English in Venezuela

TEFL jobs in Venezuela

Teaching English in Venezuela is not a realistic option for most foreign teachers at present. Several governments, including the United States and the United Kingdom, advise their citizens against travel to Venezuela because of serious safety risks, and legal paid work requires a visa arranged in advance. Most teachers interested in the region choose Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico or Chile instead.

Is it safe to teach English in Venezuela?

Check your government’s travel advice before considering any trip. The US State Department and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office both publish current advice on Venezuela, and both have advised against travel because of risks including crime, civil unrest and the limited ability of foreign governments to help their citizens there. Travel insurance is often invalid where your government advises against travel.

Do you need a visa to teach English in Venezuela?

Yes. Entering as a visitor does not give you the right to work. Paid teaching work requires a visa that allows employment, arranged with an employer and the Venezuelan authorities. Visa services and consular access can be limited, so always confirm requirements directly with official Venezuelan representation and your own government before making plans.

What are the best alternatives in Latin America?

If you want to teach English in South America or the Spanish speaking world, these markets offer legal routes, steady demand and much lower risk:

  • Colombia, Venezuela’s neighbour, with large markets in Bogotá and Medellín and a growing demand for English.
  • Ecuador, which uses the US dollar and has affordable living costs in Quito and Cuenca.
  • Mexico, one of the largest and most accessible markets in the Americas.
  • Chile, one of the most stable and well organised markets in South America.

What qualifications do you need to teach in Latin America?

Across the region, a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours is the standard requirement, and a degree helps with better paid jobs and work visas. Our 120 Hour Advanced TEFL Course meets the standard requirement, and the Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL course is a regulated qualification employers can verify on the Ofqual register. Teaching online is another option that lets you work with students in Venezuela and elsewhere without travelling.

Living costs

The monthly payment for an English teacher in Venezuela is not the best, you can expect to earn between $400-$600, and therefore a lot of teachers have more than one job or take on extra part-time work to top up their income. Private tutoring is one option, and you can either go to the homes of your students or have them come to you. You could also choose to apply for a job in another industry, but you would have to have some Spanish language skills to successfully do this.

When you are teaching English in Venezuela, you will find that the cost of living is lower than in other areas of South America like Argentina or Chile. There has been some inflation recently, but the cost of housing should be reasonable for an English teacher in Venezuela.

That is one benefit you will find in many schools. They do offer English teachers in Venezuela housing as a perk of the job. You may be able to rent a small property alone or find others looking to share accommodation and move into a house share.

The figures for living costs in Venezuela are taken from Numbeo.com, the world’s largest cost of living comparison site.
