The Hire Wire · For institutions
For careers services, student unions and departments
The Hire Wire is a free fortnightly briefing on teaching English abroad. Who is hiring, what it pays, when applications close. This page is for you, the person a student comes to when they say they are thinking of going.
New to it? Read the current edition of The Hire Wire, or carry on below for what it means for your students.
Why we made this page
You get asked about teaching abroad all the time. The answers change faster than anyone can reasonably keep up with.
Every big government programme runs on its own calendar. JET in Japan, EPIK in Korea, TFETP in Taiwan, NALCAP and the regional auxiliares schemes in Spain, TAPIF in France, the assistantship routes across Europe. They open and close months apart, and the dates move. A student who first hears about JET in February has already missed it by months, and nobody told them.
No careers service has a person sitting there tracking thirty ministry calendars, and honestly, why would it. That is our job. We do it, we publish what we find for free, and you get to give a straight answer in the appointment instead of telling a student to go and search forums.
Why you can link to it
What we hold ourselves to
- Official sources only. Every salary and deadline comes from a government, ministry or programme source. Never a forum, never a competitor, never a recruiter’s blog.
- Visible verification dates. Every figure carries the date we last checked it, so you can see how fresh it is before you lean on it.
- Public corrections. When a deadline or salary moves after we publish, we change the edition and say so on the page. We do not quietly rewrite the record.
- Named authors. Editions are written by people who have actually taught, credited by name, with bios you can read.
- An open editorial charter. All of the above is written down and public, so you can check it instead of taking our word for it.
- Nothing gated. No paywall, no signup to read the site, nothing your students have to buy.

A note from the founder
I set this company up in 2017 because I kept meeting people who had been sold a TEFL course on a promise nobody intended to keep. The briefing came later, for a simpler reason. I got tired of watching good graduates miss a deadline by two months and lose a year over it.
So there is no catch here. It is free, it will stay free, and there is nothing your students have to buy to use any of it. We do sell TEFL courses, and I would rather tell you that on this page than have you find out later and wonder what else we left out.
If you ever find a figure on our site that is wrong, email me. Not the team, me. We will correct it in the open, with the date on it, and I will thank you for it.

Six reference desks
The parts your students will use most
These sit alongside the fortnightly briefing and get updated with it. All free, all open, no account needed. If you would rather send students to one place than six, link The Hire Wire and they will find the rest from there.
Deadline alerts
Your students will not miss the window
The big government programmes open once a year and close without sending anyone a reminder. JET in Japan opened on 21 September 2026 and closes on 13 November 2026 at 11:59pm HST for US applicants, with other countries setting their own dates through their embassies. The Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for France closes on 6 October 2026 at 5pm Eastern. TAPIF in France has published no 2027/28 opening date, and its last cycle opened on 3 November, so early November is a pattern rather than a date you can plan a student’s year around. NALCAP in Spain shut on 30 June 2026 and the ministry has published no 2027/28 date. We re-read JET, EPIK and Fulbright at source on 23 and 30 September 2026, and the desks carry the check date beside every figure. Miss one of these and your student waits a full year.
This is an alert, not a newsletter you feel obliged to read. Tick the regions your students ask about and we will warn you before the window shuts. Pass the link to students, subscribe yourself, or do both. Most advisers do both.
Choose the regions your students ask about and we will email you before each application window closes. One email per closing window, unsubscribe in a click, and we never pass your address to a third party. See our privacy policy.

Wording you can paste straight in
If the briefing is useful to your students, a link from your working-abroad, teaching-abroad or graduate-opportunities page is the single most helpful thing you can do for us. Here is the copy, ready to go. No attribution required, no tracking parameters, and reword it however suits your page.

Longer: for a page with a paragraph per resource
The Hire Wire is a free fortnightly briefing on teaching English abroad, published by The TEFL Institute. It tracks which countries are hiring, what roles actually pay in local currency and euro, and when application windows for the major government programmes open and close. Every figure is verified against official government and programme sources and carries a visible verification date. The site also hosts a salary index, a visa desk, a paperwork checklist, an eligibility checker and a country matcher. No subscription is required to use any of it. teflinstitute.com/the-hire-wire

If a link is not the right fit
None of it costs anything. Nothing to sign and nothing to procure.
Talk to a person
Tell us what your students actually need and we will send you the version of this that helps. We will not add you to a mailing list for it.
Full disclosure
Who publishes this, and how it is paid for
Set out plainly, because it is the first thing an institution should ask and the last thing most providers get round to answering.
Who publishes The Hire Wire?
The TEFL Institute, a trading name of The TEFL Institute Limited, registered in Ireland under company number 613324, registered office 4 Shandon Street, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, X34 A365.
Do you sell anything?
Yes. We are a TEFL course provider, and course fees are how the company makes its money. That is worth knowing before you decide whether to link to us.
So why is the briefing free?
Because it is how we earn a reputation with people thinking about teaching abroad. A small number of readers eventually train with us. The vast majority never do, and the briefing is written and checked exactly the same way either way. There is no advertising for our courses inside it, and nothing on the site sits behind a form or a payment.
How do I know the figures are right?
Every salary and deadline is checked against a government, ministry or programme source, and the date it was checked is printed beside it. When something changes after publication we correct it in the open rather than editing quietly.
Do you place students in jobs?
No. We publish information. We are not a recruiter, we take no commission, and we charge no placement fees. If a page ever implies otherwise, that is an error and we would like to know.
What do you want from us?
A link from your resources page, if the briefing is genuinely useful to your students. That is it. No contract, no fee, no data sharing, and nothing for you to sign.
