Public Schools

The first option you’ll have access to is public schooling, and it can be popular to say the least. You can teach English at whatever level you see fit because it’s taught from a young age. There are always job opportunities across Valletta, so it’s up to you to pick what interests you. 

Naturally, as this is public education, you’ll have to abide by whatever terms your chosen school has, and have the qualifications necessary to do well. It’s usually your TEFL diploma and a degree, but it’s up to the public school in question. 

International Schools

Somewhere as beautiful and interesting as Valletta does tend to attract a lot of people moving for business, and more than a few expats. You’ll want to take a proper look at the different options for private and international schools, because they can be a good place to work if you’ve got the talent. 

These types of schools are often privately run and funded, so they can afford to pay more for the talent they need. You’ll be able to pick up a higher wage on average, and there are often perks like accomodation or travel costs. However, you’ll need a lot more experience and qualifications to get a job there. 

Language Schools

If you’re a new TEFL teacher, then you’ll probably follow the time-honoured tradition of going to a language school in Valletta and trying to find a job there. 

These types of schools are geared towards older adults who weren’t in education when the policies about teaching English were in play. Therefore, they’re just trying to catch up, and will be more than happy to learn and be respectful of the teacher. 

It sounds pretty good at first glance, but there are things to keep in mind about this type of learning. First of all, the work is only usually part time – contracts tend to cap out at 30 hours. You’ll need to look at other ways to earn money on the side if you can’t make enough.

Obviously, you can do some tutoring to supplement your income, but it isn’t guaranteed to bring in a fixed amount. We also heavily encourage you not to bother with a vehicle because it’ll cost too much and there’s a great transport system which covers all of Valletta you’d need to visit. It’s also quite affordable too, so life isn’t too difficult to enjoy so long as you make smart decisions.
