TEACH ENGLISH IN UZBEKISTAN: THE COMPLETE GUIDE FOR TEFL TEACHERS

Uzbekistan is located in central Asia and is a fully landlocked country. It borders Afghanistan in the north, Tajikistan in the east, and sits to the west of Kazakhstan with Turkmenistan in the southwest. The population of Uzbekistan is around 33 million people, and most of them are considered natives, but there is an increasing population of people from other countries and cultures.

Commercially, Uzbekistan is a producer of gas and oil, and it also has a strong agricultural presence. It’s considered to be a stable economy containing a mixture of planned and market economic diversity. A president heads up Uzbekistan and is considered the head of state, while a prime minister leads the government. Those who call Uzbekistan home will know that it is a fascinating and historically interesting country that has an important story to tell in architecture, literature and music. When Uzbekistan was part of the Soviet Union, the second language was Russian; however, since it became independent in 1991, English has gained popularity and is now the official second language in the country. This has led to an increase in influence from English-speaking countries such as America and the UK, including television programs and other cultural influences.

With that in mind, you can understand why there are plenty of opportunities for TEFL teachers to work in Uzbekistan. If you live in Uzbekistan and are already considering a career teaching English as a foreign language, it could also be a smart move to make. In this guide, you will find some advice on how to get the best qualifications as a TEFL teacher in Uzbekistan; spoiler alert: you can study online and gain a world-recognised qualification! Private Language Schools

Private language schools are primarily designed for adults looking to improve their English skills. A lot of the time, they are only really interested in conversational English and are not that fussed about written English. Classes take place during the evenings and weekends because, during the week, these people will be at work. You may find the occasional child learner, but more often than not, you will be teaching adults. While it creates an unusual working pattern, it’s also quite beneficial if you’re in a new country because, during the day, you can head out and explore the local area and do some of the tourist activities that you would otherwise miss if you were at work full time.

Private Bilingual and International Schools

As a newly qualified TEFL teacher, international schools may be out of your league, but you never know. It depends a lot on your background, other qualifications and experience. International or bilingual schools are private institutions generally designed for the children of other expats in the area. Unlike local schools, they will be taught predominantly in English, and the parents will be a lot more interested in ensuring their children get a good education. This means that they are some of the highest-paid English teaching jobs available, but the teachers selected will also likely have a degree and experience in classroom management and other skills.

Private Tutoring

Another option is to tutor on a private basis, either in people’s homes or if you have the space and set up in your own home. You do need to consider any other paid employment you are undertaking. For example, if you work at a language school. They may frown on tutoring on the side as it is a conflict of interest with their business. If you are not employed anywhere else, you are free to set up your own business but do remember that you are self-employed and responsible for any tax rules within the country.

Your final option is to set yourself up as an English tutor online. This does require a really reliable Internet connection, but providing you have that, your students can be anywhere in the world. There are plenty of online tutor companies looking for qualified TEFL language teachers. Much like regular employers, they will have different requirements from their teachers; some will need you to have a degree, whereas others won’t, but all of them are pretty likely to ask for your TEFL certification as standard.

If you are looking to travel to teach English in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, you will need a work permit and a Visa. This can be applied for by visiting your local Uzbekistan embassy. If you have a job lined up in Tashkent or anywhere else in Uzbekistan, your employer will probably help sort your Visa, which is incredibly valuable. In order to live and work in the country, you must have health insurance in order to access their healthcare system. Again, some employers include this cover as part of the benefits of your job, so it’s worth checking. Most jobs require you to have a degree, but language schools tend to be slightly less concerned about this, providing you have your TEFL certification and market yourself well.

Tashkent

When it comes to finding work, Tashkent is just one of the options, but being the largest city, it does have a lot of opportunities and vacancies. It comes with the standard hustle and bustle of city living, but it also has a rich cultural history and a very diverse population.

Samarkand

If you would rather avoid the largest city, why not consider Samarkand? This is a little more rural but still has plenty to offer. It is considered the historic centre of Uzbekistan, and there are lots of historical and cultural attractions to visit, including, of course, cities home to the Silk Road monuments. Opportunities here are good because it is a tourist area, and those working in tourism want to have good English skills.

Bakara

Located in West Uzbekistan, Bakara is another option. There are lots of language schools and international schools looking to work with TEFL teachers. It’s a nice, quiet, laid-back area to live in and has a fascinating history of its own.

Average earnings for English teachers in Uzbekistan are around $700-$800 each month. However, you do have to remember that a lot of different factors come into play when working out salary. Your qualifications, experience and presentation will factor into the salary you are offered. As previously mentioned, international schools tend to pay the best, but they are also looking for candidates who have degrees and experience. If you are nearly qualified, it’s most likely you will find work at a language school, but the salaries are competitive and should equate to the local cost of living. City institutions also tend to offer higher salaries than those in more rural areas, but again, the cost of living tends to balance this out.

Compared with other areas of Europe, the cost of living in Uzbekistan is considered reasonably low. The biggest expense is always your accommodation, and there are two different styles of home to choose from. Old Soviet-style apartments and new builds. The older properties tend to attract a lower rental cost because they have more maintenance requirements. New builds tend to be slightly more expensive but come with a lot less to do. Whenever you are in a new country, the best advice is to live like a local. If you try to find all of the products you are used to in your home country, you will be paying a premium for imports.

Rather than heading to a supermarket, why not look at the local farmers market, where you will find a range of fresh produce that has been locally grown? It’s also not that expensive to eat out. So going out for a meal with friends is certainly not going to break the budget. Uzbekistan also boasts a very comprehensive public transport system that is cheap to use, so getting around is easy.

Cost of living costs

  • Accommodation: $300–$400
  • Utilities: $50-$100
  • Basic groceries for one person per month: $100 to $150
  • Transportation: $10 to $20 per month for a monthly pass for public transportation.
  • Restaurant meal for one person: $10 to $20.
  • Movie ticket: $5 to $10.
