Lots of people visit the capital of Spain in order to enjoy themselves, but what’s it like to live in Seville? If you fancied building a career teaching English abroad, how easy would it be to get started?

Thankfully, Europe is one of those places where it’s quite easy to start a career teaching English as a foreign language. It’s important to understand that when it comes to things like Europe, even though a lot of people speak English, it’s normally a second or even third language. Each country in Europe has its own language – French, German, Spanish, etc – which means that you can still build up a TEFL career teaching English in these places.

We make courses which are known around the world for being authentic and a good education for new teachers. However, the 120-hour course is one which continues to be held in high regard by many, and it isn’t difficult to see why this is the case.

It is a qualification which we offer to help get people into teaching quickly, as we recognise that you will want to get your qualifications sorted out sooner rather than later, especially when it comes to making big plans and moving abroad. The course is 120 hours because that is generally agreed by schools across the world as being the minimum period of time you would need to learn how to teach properly.

Throughout the qualification, you’ll be given access to all the tools and resources you need to teach English anywhere in the world. We haven’t made a course that’s only useful in Europe, but instead one that can take you wherever you like, from a classroom to tutoring privately if you so desire.

This is the fastest course that we have available for our students. You can complete it in as little as four weeks. However, if you don’t have four weeks to exclusively study, which many people do not, then you can complete it across the six-month period given. This is plenty of time to balance your study with other commitments.

We have tried to make the course easy to study because we want you to be able to achieve your goals. The only thing you need to get started with us is a C1 level of proficiency in English. You should also try and have a device which can access the internet too, but that’s not difficult to find – you’re using one to read this, after all.

We aim to be a provider you can trust which is why we aim to deliver the type of support you’ve been searching for. For example, a prospective employer can use the website to verify how authentic your qualification is, and you can access our dedicated app to continue your studies anywhere you go.

If you are going to study for your new qualification, we believe you should do it in a way that works for you. After all, everybody has a unique style of learning. There are 10 different modules that you need to complete as part of your course. You can access each module in whatever way you feel is best. We offer written materials, audio and videos.

We have built this course to give you the skills that you need to go anywhere in the world and teach. This is not just a course for Spain or other parts of Europe, but globally.

We find that it takes about four weeks of studying to finish the course. However, not everyone has four weeks to study 24/7, which is why we give all of our learners six months to complete the course. This is plenty of time to finish the qualification without having to worry about working around other commitments. We know it is important to have a healthy work-life balance.

So, you’ve got your new qualification, and you’re keen to go and use it wherever and whenever you’d like. There are four main options for teaching in Spain, as is the case for most places around the world. Some of these options are a lot more feasible than others if you’re a freshly qualified teacher, so you’ll need to pick what works for you.

Public Schools

You can get a job in Spain if you have the qualifications necessary for the public sector – they’re always looking for people who have the smarts and skills necessary for teaching in schools. Lots of schools have English as a foreign language, so you’ve usually got your pick of locations. However, there’s a few things you should keep in mind if you want to get the best results.

For example, you’ll need a degree and usually a teaching qualification that’s obtained in Spain itself. Therefore, most new teachers won’t be able to get a job as soon as they move to Spain. However, if you make this type of career path a long-term goal, then you’ll have something to work towards when you get settled into your new life in Seville.

International Schools

Private schools are much the same no matter where you go in the world. They’re a cut above public schools, which means that for the cost of paying to attend them, students get a global education that will help them no matter where they want to go and what they want to do. This makes it good for teaching, because the salary is usually much more competitive (read: higher) and there are often extra benefits to take advantage of like accomodation or travel allowances.

However, if you feel that the qualifications for public education were high, then you’ll find private education even harder to get into. You’ll need to have a lot of skills and experience, and you can expect fierce competition from other qualified teachers across the area who want to snatch up this job as much as you do.

Language Schools

If you’re looking to teach English in Seville, then your best bet is going to be to try and look for a language school with an opening. Most language schools have a long-standing relationship with your average TEFL teacher, because they like to hire you with a few basic qualifications and you get a chance to pick up your first serious contract. It’s a win/win for everyone and it’s worth doing.

You’ll be teaching adults who want to learn English for work or other parts of life, and you’ll often find your lessons are in the evening or on the weekend. You’ll be in good stead if you can teach business English because it helps a lot for job prospects. Now, it’s not a perfect system by any means. You’ll only be able to get a part-time teaching contract in most instances, which averages at between 25 and 30 hours. This is a good start, but it’s not a full-time job. You’ll have to think about bringing in extra cash another way, and this means thinking about things like tutoring or online work. However, it’s a well-recommended start point, and most TEFL teachers have gone straight to a language school to start earning.

Tutoring

If you want a bit of freedom with regards to how you teach and, indeed, what you teach, then something we can wholeheartedly recommend is that you go in for something like tutoring, because it’s a career path that gives you complete freedom with regard to what you do and how you do it.

As a private tutor, you pick your hours, prices and students. It’s a good way to teach, but it does require you to know what you’re doing with regards to starting up a small business. You’ll also have to pay tax on what you earn, so it isn’t a perfect solution, but it is one which can be highly lucrative if you’re prepared to put the time and effort into what you’re doing.

If you’ve got a strong internet connection, then teaching English online can be a good way to make money. It removes the restrictions of only working in the Seville area and gives you more freedom in terms of what you do and how you do it. Now, obviously, you’ll need to get resources to do this, and you’ll need to run it like a business, but it may eventually lead to a remote job so it’s worth exploring.

Teaching English abroad in Europe is pretty straightforward because most of the time, you’ll find the requirements are similar for any country. It’s usually a case of having to get a visa or a work permit and applying for permanent residency later on. Ultimately it depends where you’re coming from in the world so you need to look up the rules for your country.

Seville

Seville is the culture capital of Spain and is one of the most interesting places to live and work. It’s not quite got the vibrant nightlife of Barcelona or the contrasting air of Valencia, but it’s still pretty fun to explore nonetheless.

Barcelona

Barcelona, being the party capital of Europe, is a fun place to kick back and relax. Life is pretty bucolic in the day but swells to a fever pitch at night, making it a wonderful choice for anyone who is interested. The best thing you could do is take a look at how you personally would balance the two sides of the area.

The making of money as a TEFL teacher is highly circumstantial because it depends on what you choose to do with yourself and what you can expect from your employment. Better jobs equals more money but they’re harder to get. On average, you’ll make somewhere in the region of €1700, which is plenty enough to live comfortably.

Spain is about 20% cheaper to live in than England at any given point, which is a normal benchmark for cost-of-living – the UK is one of the more expensive places to live. Live locally and avoid unnecessary costs and you’ll find that there’s a lot to enjoy in life.

  • Salary: €1700
  • Average Rent: €935
  • Utilities: €150
  • Public Transport Pass: €36
  • Milk: €1.20
  • Bread: €1.50
