Frequently Asked Questions

What is TEFL?

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It’s primarily teaching non-native speakers English without the use of translation. This means you won’t need to know their first language. TEFL teachers will need the knowledge and know-how of the methodologies to teach this way. This is why teachers must first complete a TEFL course and gain the qualification. TEFL is widely used to teach English online in one-to-one or small group scenarios or to teach English abroad and is sometimes even used as an easier way to travel.

Who can do a TEFL course?

First and foremost, aspiring TEFL teachers must be outgoing and confident and not afraid to make themselves look a little silly, especially when teaching children. Expression is a huge part of the methodologies to be able to get your point across. You’ll warm up to this in time, and it all takes practice.

We suggest people are at least 17 years old with a C1 level of English or higher. If you’re unsure, we have a free English test to help. TEFL is also great for you if you can work using your initiative because it’s an online course so you will need to be your own motivation.

What can I do with my TEFL certificate?

As a TEFL-qualified teacher, the world is your oyster. Our 120-hour TEFL certificate is fully accredited and internationally recognised, meaning you can teach online or around the globe. If you’re looking to teach in your home country at a language centre or want to go to the UAE, we suggest you do our higher-level qualification – our 180 Hour Level 5 TEFL course. This is the requirement in such competitive countries.

What does level 5 mean?

A Level 5 TEFL course is one that Ofqual regulates according to its qualifications framework. Another Level 5 teaching qualification is the CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Once qualified with a Level 5 TEFL qualification, you’ll have access to the most competitive jobs worldwide.

What does regulated mean?

A regulated qualification means that it is officially recognised by the government and sits on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

What is the difference between the 120 Hour TEFL course and the 180 Hour level 5 TEFL course?

Both courses are your main TEFL qualification and allow you to start your ESL career. However, there are a few differences between them and the right choice will depend on your story and goals.

The 180 Hour course is a Level 5 qualification and can be compared to a CELTA or TrinityTESOL. This course is harder and longer to complete, but worth it in the end, as it opens up many opportunities. This course should be taken if you’d like to teach in your home country or certain places in Asia.

How are the courses laid out?

Our courses are filled with course content, videos, podcasts, reflective tasks, and tests. They are online courses and can be completed in your own time and from home.

Our 180 Hour TEFL course has 11 modules with a test at the end of each module consisting of both MCQs and open-ended questions. This Level 5 course has a 100% pass mark. All of the tests can be taken online and submitted. Our system will correct your multiple-choice answers immediately, and you’ll be asked to retake the test if incorrect. You can retake the test as many times as you need. The open-ended answers are checked by our assessment team, and you will get feedback if your answers need to be changed. You won’t get an unlimited number of times, and there may be an extra to repeat, so be sure to consider their feedback. Once our assessors pass you, your Level 5 government-regulated certificate will be issued. You are given 6 months to complete the course, but extensions are available if needed.

Our specialist courses are much shorter than the primary TEFL qualifications. They are all completed online and in your own time. All tests are done online and corrected instantly. They have course content and tests throughout the course. They can be completed before or after the primary TEFL qualification.

Our 10-Hour Classroom Methodologies Course is completed through Zoom. You will join a class of no more than 12 students with your tutor. It will be held over two 5-hour days. Our Academic team will be responsible for your passing mark based on your attendance, involvement and completion of an assignment.

Tell me about the correction/assessment process?

All online course tests are corrected instantly, except our 180 Hour Level 5 TEFL course. All accredited courses require an 80% pass rate, and retests are free.

The 180 Hour Level 5 TEFL course contains both multiple-choice and open-ended questions. The multiple-choice questions are corrected instantly, like normal, but word count is the only factor corrected instantly with the open-ended answers. After every three modules, our expert assessors will correct your answers and give you tips if an answer is not up to standard. Although the instant corrections are free to redo, you may be charged if your long answers are incorrect for a third time, so please consider their advice when completing the reassessment process.

Is the certificate included in the price?

All of our accredited courses include a PDF version of the certificate. This is perfect for applying for jobs online or abroad. Sometimes, perhaps for visa reasons, you may need a hard copy and you will be able to order it in our shop after you complete your course.

Updated review 12th March 2024: I have just completed the Level 5 TEFL 180 hour diploma, and I am absolutely delighted with my experience at TEFL Ireland. The academic team are extremely professional and supportive. From start to finish Rachel Hammond was an excellent support, and provided expert guidance throughout the 6 month period. Also Laura from the academic team, has also been an absolutely brilliant support answering all the tricky questions I had, and she was always there on Discord chat with kind words of encouragement. This experience has really made me want to stay in touch with the TEFL community. I have nothing but positive words to say about them.Feedback for Michelle in September 2023:I just finished the 10 hour Virtual TEFL course tonight. It was brilliant from start to finish. Michelle Benson is an excellent presenter and teacher. She really engaged us and put us at ease, and she spent time answering our questions. As I only started TEFL at the start of September , I noticed as well that she explained the complicated verb tenses in English really well. It was very inspiring to listen to her, and I loved the way she explained the different parts of teaching. I'm so happy I've started this course. The 10 hour virtual course makes you feel much more enthusiastic too. Michelle has the magic!

FAQS

What If I’m Not Good At Grammar?

Don’t panic! In many cases your focus as an English teacher will be conversational. Most native English speakers aren’t aware of grammar terms; but you’ll cover everything you need to know during your course, plus receive a 70+ page Grammar eBook.

What Score Do I Need To Pass My TEFL Course?

Your TEFL course is marked through continuous assessment with end of module knowledge tests. You’ll need to score 100% to pass, and unlock the next module. If you don’t pass first time, you’ll be able to re-sit at no extra cost, so don’t worry.

How Long Does A TEFL Course Take?

The time taken to complete a TEFL course depends on how much study time you can dedicate each week and which duration of course or training package you choose. You’ll have 180 days (six months) to complete your TEFL course, which is typically twice as long as needed to finish our most comprehensive training courses.
