Test your english

Teaching English as a foreign language is something a lot of people do and can be a rewarding career. However, you need to have a firm understanding of grammar to effectively teach and ensure students learn what they need to in order to succeed. Here at the TEFL Institute, we strive to deliver a premier education that will help you seek employment anywhere in the world – from South Africa to other countries. The 30-hour Advanced Grammar course is a tool you can use to understand grammar correctly.

Most people have a purely instinctual understanding of grammar – they can understand the way that we read or speak sentences and modify their words to suit the situation. After all, the way that we use grammar changes the meaning behind a sentence. If you’re a native English speaker, you’re probably confident in your grasp of our language. Do you feel qualified to be an English teacher? If asked, could you explain why a certain part of grammar works in the way it does? Most people can’t, which highlights the need for a proper grammar course to help you gain the technical knowledge necessary to grow and develop.

We have designed a course which will give you the tools and skills you need to be able to teach grammar at a high level, and it’s spread out over a helpful, easy-to-work 30-hour course. We provide key insights into word order, tenses, sentence formation and more. You’ll come out of this course as a grammar expert and a more confident teacher.

Advanced Grammar for English Teachers

Module One: How are Words Formed?

Have you ever wondered how it is that we form words and how different words have come together to make the language we all speak without thinking about it? In this module, you’ll answer those questions as we dive into what is, effectively, an introduction to grammar. You’ll learn all about how words have changed and evolved over time, which is going to improve your confidence in teaching.

Module Two: How to Arrange Words into Sentences

You might be surprised to find out that there are actually more than 171,000 words in the English language. However, when it comes to your lessons, you’ll only be expected to teach a few hundred. You’ll be getting a proper crash course on how to do that in this module, which is where we take a look at arranging words into sentences and key skills that students need to know.

Module Three: Time to Talk Tenses

You are probably familiar with basic tenses as a minimum concept – the idea of past, present and future. However, there are actually up to 13 tenses to consider, and we’ll be exploring all of them to help you teach your students in the right way.

Module Four: How to Teach Advanced Grammar

Most entry-level TEFL positions will ask you to deliver normal English lessons, as this is the bulk of your role. Therefore, these experiences are often helpful for building up knowledge as a teacher, and they form the bulk of your first few years of teaching. However, you’ll only really touch on the basics of grammar, which is good, but if you’re ready to upgrade your earning power, then you’ll want to take a look at this module!

We help you to understand the different tenses that you’ll be teaching and how to make activities that will help your students to consolidate their learning.

Highfields Qualifications

The TEFL Institute is a firm partner of Highfield Qualifications, and they regulate and manage our Level 5 courses. The 180-hour course is meant for people who don’t have a lot of experience teaching, but it also works well for people who want to improve their knowledge and need to validate past experience.

You’ll find that the 30-Hour Advanced Grammar Course is the perfect companion for any of our courses, and the work we do with Highfield Qualifications – and Ofqual by extension – is proof of our abilities as a provider.

You can go to the Ofqual website and verify our qualifications for yourself or find out more about their criteria for accreditation – it’s worth a read! The result is that our qualifications can be used all over the world and they’ve gained universal appeal as a result.

The Accreditation Council for Distance Learning:

The Accreditation Council for Distance Learning is an accrediting body which focuses specifically on distance learning, and looks at what providers like us offer our students and how we run things.

They subscribe to a simple standard of maintaining quality for learners and to help students feel confident picking a provider to work with. We are pleased that we have been accredited by the organisation, and we are subject to ongoing examinations and assessments to ensure that we stay accredited. Our verification number is 2854-2540.

The Vital Consular:

This specific verification process is not an accreditation and is instead a seal of approval. This is different in context, so it is worth explaining in detail. As we are a verified UK provider, the courses which we offer are all designed for use around the world. You can get a job in South Africa, China, or the US – anywhere that’s in need of a TEFL teacher is probably a good pick for you. So, why does the scheme make a difference? Well, this is a verification seal that gets your qualification approved by the UK government. In case you weren’t sure, that’s a substantial accolade. Not every provider will have this, so we are incredibly fortunate that we have worked hard to get it.

This specific certification is key if you want to go and work somewhere like China or Taiwan. In these countries, you have to validate all of your documents when you apply for a work permit, and if you don’t have a document which is accepted, then you have to find another one, which can take time and cost a lot of money. Luckily, our qualifications are recognised by a legitimate authority so they can be used.

We are a provider who has worked hard to deliver an experience that allows people to get the best education possible. Our team has put in a lot of work to create courses and options which can be used to improve everybody’s experiences. We have worked to a point where we are recognised in the industry for being a leading provider.

  • WHAT IS TEFL?

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It is primarily teaching non-native speakers English without the use of translation. This means you won’t need to know their first language. TEFL teachers will need the knowledge and know-how of the methodologies to teach this way. This is why teachers must first complete a TEFL course and gain the qualification. TEFL is widely used to teach English online in one-to-one or small group scenarios or to teach English abroad and is sometimes even used as an easier way to travel.

  • WHO CAN DO A TEFL COURSE?

First and foremost, aspiring TEFL teachers must be outgoing and confident, and not afraid to make themselves look a little silly, especially when teaching children. Expression is a huge part of the methodologies to get your point across. You’ll warm up to this in time, and it all takes practice.

We suggest people be at least 17 with a C1 level of English or higher. If you’re not sure, we have a free English test. We also would recommend people who work on their own initiative as it is an online course and you will need to be your own motivation.

  • WHAT DO I NEED TO TEACH ONLINE?

If you have no experience in teaching online, a good idea is to get some teaching practice in, as they may ask for “experience” hours, which are unpaid. You can alternatively complete our 10-hour Methodologies course, which has a section focused on teaching English online.

Most online companies will ask for your TEFL certificate, teaching practice, accessibility to good WiFi, a laptop or other computer devices, and headphones. Some online companies may ask their teachers also to have a Bachelor’s Degree. This is evident in Chinese online companies, as it is a government regulation (no matter where you live).

  • HOW ARE THE COURSES LAID OUT?

Our courses contain content, videos, podcasts, reflective tasks, and tests. They are online courses and can be completed independently and from home.

Our specialist courses are much shorter than the main TEFL qualifications. They are all completed online and in your own time. All tests are done online and corrected instantly. They have course content and tests throughout the course. They can be completed before or after the main TEFL qualification.

  • ARE THE COURSES ACCREDITED?

The TEFL Institute is fully accredited by ACDL. Our 180-hour Level OFQUAL regulates 5 TEFL courses.

  • IS THIS COURSE COMPLETELY ONLINE? HOW FLEXIBLE IS THIS COURSE?

All courses are done online, and no travelling is required for the tests. Except for the 10-hour Virtual training, you can log on anytime. This is to ensure that our TEFL courses can be done during work or other studies. There is a 6-month deadline for the courses, but you can contact us for extensions.

I cannot recommend The TEFL Institute of Ireland enough for anyone interested in entering the world of English language teaching . The courses are accessible, easy to follow, convey exactly what is necessary, and highly varied, allowing anyone to find their speciality in this field .On par with this however, the institution is exceptionally helpful, patient, and has plenty of useful advice should issues arise during study or job searching. Jessica in particular has been indispensable in my own endeavours.

I recently completed the 180-hr TEFL Diploma + 30-hr Business English module. Throughout the course I regularly sought advice, receiving superb support from Laura Graham. Towards the end of the Diploma, I made contact with Jessica Jeffery, who gave me expert guidance on preparing to teach TEFL. Whatever question I posed, she provided answers and solutions. These TEFL support people were at all times very friendly, ever-helpful, and all in quick response time. A warm and personal touch!

Overall, I enjoyed and was determined to gain my TEFL Certificate. I liked learning about the different ways of learning English in person and online, learning about different types of ways to teach students like using realia, for example ,and learning about how to write lesson plans. Initially, I found learning to write the lesson plans annoying and irritating, but eventually, I found that to be one of the most rewarding parts of the course. Being able to write a lesson plan helps one go in with a plan to help guide and teach students the English language. I see the emphasis on learning to write lesson plans during the course to be a very insightful idea on the part of TEFL Institute of Ireland. It builds confidence, gives one an idea on how to conduct a lesson, and builds a foundation on which to start from. The cons I had with the TEFL Institute of Ireland is that there were either spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes, certain lessons could not be confirmed to be completed because the arrow button was grayed out, and lastly, the assessments take way too long to complete because there were about 20 - 30 questions in one assessment and they were all open-ended. I think that they could have chosen for students to have half the number of assessment questions (10 - 15 questions) or could have made some of them multiple choice.Mr. John Curry spoke to me in the beginning when I was getting ready to start the TEFL Certification course and the recommendations he gave to me were helpful. Also, during the "How to change your career in 2026 with TEFL Certification" Zoom Webinar, Mr. Curry's explanation of his experience and the job related information was confidence-building and encouraging.I am grateful for the benefits I have received from being receiving my TEFL Certification from the TEFL Institute of Ireland.

I have just finished the 10 hour Advanced Certificate in TEFL Classroom Methodologies course. The course was excellent very informative, and I learned great strategies to use in the classroom. Michelle Benson was an excellent instructor, as she has a bubbly personality and a wealth of experience in the area. Michelle kept all the students engaged through interactive classes over the two days while maintaining a fun and relaxed learning environment. I would not hesitate to recommend this course!
