  • 1-3 Modules One-Three:

Module 1: The Principles of Teaching English Grammar

In the first module, we get straight into one of the first core parts of teaching English. We look at grammar and talk you through the different types of grammar that you will need for teaching, as well as explain the basics of the English language. Once we’ve successfully completed this module, you will be a grammar expert ready to teach your students.

Module 2: The Principles of Teaching English Vocabulary

Once you have successfully mastered the fine art of grammatical theory, we can move on to the second module and take a look at vocabulary. This is a core part of being able to teach English as a foreign language.

Throughout this module, you’ll learn how we teach different aspects of vocabulary and how you can grow and develop the skills of your learners. Once you have finished this module, you will be able to show learners how they can use grammar throughout their daily lives to achieve the tools necessary for success.

Module 3: The Principles of Learners’ Needs and Teaching Methodologies for Online and Face-to-Face Learning

In this third module, you will get a first look at teaching methodologies and how you can develop the skills necessary to be an effective teacher. We look at how to apply methods and tools from all over the world. These methods will naturally be different in an online setting; we compensate for this by showing you how to adjust them as necessary to succeed.

You also get a proper history lesson on the nature of the English classroom and how it has evolved over time. We show you how the classroom of the future might look, too – how will it evolve and change? Finally, you will be shown how to identify needs in your learners and how to make courses and implement features that allow them to reach their full potential.

  • 4-6 Modules Four-Six:

Module 4: The Principles of Teaching Receptive Skills for Online and Face-to-Face Learning

In the fourth module of this course, it is time to get a proper grip on receptive skills. These are skills that your students need if they want to receive language, and we focus on reading and listening throughout the course. These skills are undoubtedly key to developing your confidence as a learner, and if you want to master them, it is time to pay attention to what we’ve got to offer you.

As a teacher, you should be aware that your learners will look to you as an example of how to do things, and we aim to help you prepare for this by showing them how to use tools outside the classroom to grow and succeed. These are things like magazines, YouTube videos, and podcasts – all of which are easy to access and help a lot with learning.

Once we have finished up here, you’ll feel confident in teaching classes in any setting you desire, be it online from your home in the Netherlands or in a classroom. Plus, we set up the next set of lessons where we look at the counterparts to receptive skills and explore productive ones.

Module 5: The Principles of Teaching Productive Skills for Online and Face-to-Face Learning

The fifth module of our course looks at the promised ‘productive skills’, and these are carefully designed to give you the best results at teaching students how to produce language, in this case, the arts of speaking and writing. You will find that these are harder for students to get the hang of, and this is perfectly understandable. However, we help equip your learners for this by giving you the tools you need to grow and thrive, so don’t worry – we’ve got you.

You will be given a whole host of activities that you can use to help get your students in a prime position to learn and be engaged with what’s going on around them. We know how difficult these skills can be to master and that’s why we’ll help you design lessons that are fun and easy to understand – perfect for teaching.

Module 6: The Principles of Teaching Pronunciation and Phonology

Our sixth module is all about the tough stuff – phonology and pronunciation. These are generally agreed to be harder subjects for students, and that’s why we take it nice and slow: You may struggle with a few of the harder subjects yourself. We’re here to support you, and that’s a job we take very seriously.

When you finish this module, you’ll be a capable expert who is confident in every aspect of English and also someone who can pronounce anything. After all, you’d be surprised how often your students will use you as a gold standard for pronouncing certain words, so you need to be comfortable with pronouncing anything to show them how it’s done.

  • 7-10 Modules Seven-Ten:

Module 7: The Principles of Online Teaching Using Teaching Aids and Materials

The classroom is definitely a space you will need to get comfortable in – you’ll be working in one in one way or another. Therefore, you need to be familiar with the virtual classroom as well as the physical one so we show you how online teaching has grown and developed over the years.

This part of the course focuses on the virtual realm and shows you how to develop and create new tools and strategies to help you thrive in an online setting. We look at things like translating some of the typical classroom aids into skills that can be used anywhere because, obviously, this is not as easy as it looks. Once we’re done with this module, you’ll be ready to teach English as a foreign language anywhere and can use your new skills to go abroad or work from the comfort of your home in the Netherlands.

Module 8: The Principles of Lesson Planning and Online Classroom Management Techniques

Now that we’ve hit the eighth module of the course, we get a little closer to the cool bits about being a teacher. You’ll get a proper look at things like lesson planning, classroom management, and how to develop a teaching style which works for you. This is where you design your unique flair and build it into your role as a teacher, so people have a lot of fun with it.

We will show you how to do stuff like plan out a syllabus, build a teaching style which is going to work for you, and how to adapt to a world which is evolving and changing all the time – teachers are expected to keep up with the times.

Module 9: The Principles of Teaching Adults English as a Foreign Language for Online and Face-to-Face Learning

In the ninth module, you will learn about teaching English as a foreign language to adults instead of children. It is important you know how to teach both types of learners because the needs and expectations that each one has will vary according to your role. There is a lot that you’ll be expected to do, and this new learner can make a big difference in how you design lessons and resources. Luckily, we’re here to help with that, and we will show you how to build tools for adult learners, why adults might want to learn English, and the way this plays into your experiences with them,

Module 10: The Principles of Teaching Young Learners English as a Foreign Language for Online and Face-to-Face Learning

Teaching English as a foreign language is a big market right now. There is a lot of work available for you these days, and you’ll quickly discover that if you’re prepared to grow your skills and pay attention to all the opportunities, you’ll be able to grow, learn and develop. That’s our goal, at any rate, so it is worth taking a look at what’s to come.

We will talk you through how to teach young people as part of this final module, and you will learn how to provide lessons and plans for the next generation. You’ll get a firm appreciation for the power of learning come the end and finish the module ready to build your new career.

Accreditation

Highfields Qualifications

As this is our Level 5 TEFL Diploma, you’ll see that it is regulated and developed by Highfield Qualifications. They are a regulatory body that works with Ofqual in the UK. Ofqual is basically the de-facto leader of the regulatory world in England. There are a lot of benefits to accreditation in this way. For one, you’ll find that this qualification is recognised worldwide. For another, it looks good on visa applications, CVs and job applications.

This is a qualification which we recommend for people who need one to formalise their past experiences, but it’s also just as good for people who have no experience. Essentially, this is a qualification that is good for anyone, and we’d recommend it based on that to help you grow and succeed. You’re welcome to check the Ofqual website if you’re curious about who this group is and what they offer people.

The Accreditation Council for Distance Learning:

The Accreditation Council for Distance Learning is a group that serves as a regulatory expert for providers who work at distance and offer distance learning. They help to support people who want to get distance learning sorted out and have devised in-house criteria for judging providers. Getting accreditation from them is a big deal thanks to their worldwide recognition, and we are proud to have secured accreditation with the company. Our accreditation number is 2854-2540.

The Vital Consular:

Of all the accolades we have, the Vital Consular is our most unique. You see, it is not an accreditation so much as a verification seal. We have built a reputation as one of the most reliable providers of distance learning. As part of our ongoing efforts, we have achieved recognition around the world from governments and businesses. However, everything that we do is for the good of our students, which is why we have signed up for this specific verification scheme to ensure that the qualifications we provide are recognised by the UK government.

There are many places worldwide where you have to authenticate your qualifications if you want to use them as part of an application for a residency permit or Visa. If you don’t have authentic, recognised qualifications, then you may have to perform additional studies to get accepted certifications. As our qualifications are all recognised by the United Kingdom and the UK

Government is a recognised global power, you will never have any issues with legitimacy.

ODLQC:

The Open and Distance Learning Quality Council was first founded in 1969. While the name and methods of the group have changed since then to meet the needs of an evolving world, the core principle of ensuring good quality learning remains intact. The goal of the organisation, such as it is, is to hold education providers accountable to ensure they deliver the best for their students. Based in the UK, the ODLQC is a leading regulatory body, and we are proud to have received accreditation from them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TEFL?

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It is primarily teaching non-native English speakers without the use of translation. This means you won’t need to know their first language. TEFL teachers will need the knowledge and know-how of the methodologies to teach in this way. This is why teachers will first need to complete a TEFL course and gain the qualification. TEFL is widely used to either teach English online in one-to-one or small group scenarios or to teach English abroad and is sometimes even used as an easier way to travel.

Who can do a TEFL course?

First and foremost, aspiring TEFL teachers must be outgoing and confident and not afraid to make themselves look a little silly, especially when teaching children. Expression is a considerable part of the methodologies to be able to get your point across. You’ll warm up to this in time, and it all takes practice.

We suggest people be at least 16 with a C1 level of English or higher. If you’re not sure, we have a free English test. We also would recommend people who work on their own initiative as it is an online course, and you will need to be your own motivation.

What can I do with my TEFL certificate?

As a TEFL-qualified teacher, the world is your oyster. Our 120 hour TEFL certificate is fully accredited and internationally recognized, meaning you can teach online or around the globe. If you are looking to teach in your home country at a language center or would like to go to the UAE, we suggest you do our higher-level qualification, our 180 hour level 5 TEFL course, as this is the requirement in such competitive countries .

What does Level 5 mean?

Ofqual regulates a Level 5 TEFL course according to its qualifications framework. Another Level Five teaching qualification is the CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Once qualified with a Level 5 TEFL qualification, you’ll have access to the most competitive jobs worldwide.

Foundation Degree: Equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. It typically involves academic training and focuses on a specific profession or field.

Within the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), Level 5 generally corresponds to post-secondary education, which may include academic and vocational pathways. Similarly, a Level 5 qualification may align with a diploma or an associate degree in other countries like Australia or Canada.

What does regulated mean?

A regulated qualification means that it is officially recognized by the government and sits on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

What is the difference between the 120 hour TEFL course and the 180 hour level 5 TEFL course?

Both courses are primary TEFL qualifications and allow you to start your ESL career. However, there are a few differences between them, and the right choice will depend on your story and goals.
The 180 hour diploma course is a level 5 qualification and can be compared to a CELTA or TrinityTESOL. This course is harder and longer to complete but worth it, as it opens up so many opportunities. This course should be taken if you’d like to teach in your home country or certain places in Asia.

How are TEFL courses laid out?

The TEFL courses are filled with course content, videos, podcasts, reflective tasks, and tests. They are online courses and can be completed in your own time and from home.

Our 180 hour TEFL course has 11 modules with a test at the end of each module, consisting of both MCQs and open-ended questions. This level 5 course has a 100% pass mark. All of the tests can be taken online and submitted. Our system will correct your multiple choice answers immediately and you’ll be asked to retake the test if not correct. You can retake the test as many times as you need. The open-ended answers are checked by our assessment team, and you will get feedback if your answers need to be changed. You won’t get an unlimited number of times, and there may be an extra to repeat, so be sure to take their feedback into account. Once our assessors pass you, your level 5 government-regulated certificate will be issued. You are given 6 months to complete the course, but extensions are available if needed.

Tell me about the correction/ assessment processes?

All online course tests are corrected instantly, except for our 180 hour Level 5 TEFL course. All accredited courses require an 80% pass rate and retests are free.

The 180 hour level 5 TEFL course contains both multiple-choice and open-ended questions. The multiple choice questions are corrected instantly like normal, but word count is the only factor corrected instantly with the open-ended answers. After every three modules, our expert assessors will correct your answers and give you some tips if an answer is not up to standard. Although the instant corrections are free to redo, you may be charged if your long answers are incorrect for a third time, so please take their advice into account when completing the reassessment process.

I did the 10-hour virtual course with Michelle and really enjoyed it. She was super engaging and made the time fly. Her energy kept the group going, and she handled the class really well. We managed to cover all the key points and still had time to try out our own teaching practice and talk about our plans for our career within TEFL. As someone who has taught around the world, Michelle was able to give everyone very helpful advice about what it takes to teach in Asia, Europe, Canada...

This was my first time participating in an online classroom setting. I expected there to be connection issues, but fortunately there were none. Clear sound, great interaction amongst fellow classmates and the host/teacher Michelle K. was really very good. Personally I think she is excellent at what she does, her tone of voice, how comfortable she made me feel as a student of TEFL, and her own experiences shared with us. I found this extremely useful. Friendly and great interpersonal people skills :)
