What will I learn?
This course is the shortest TEFL qualification you can study. It gives a condensed version of materials found in other courses but delivers everything you need to teach. Employers expect a minimum of 120 hours of study for recognised teachers. There is no main course shorter than this one. All other smaller courses are designed to supplement a main certification.
We offer a flexible and engaging learning experience. This qualification is meant to be accessed in a way that works for you. There are both written materials and video-based content to assist you in your studies. The only entry requirement we ask of our learners is that they have a C1 level of proficiency in English to start the course. You also need a device that can access the online platform.Â
If your employer wants to verify your abilities and check your qualification, they can. We have a new verification tool you can show employers prior to getting a job. All the qualifications we offer can be authenticated here.Â
Course Content
The course which we offer is broken up into ten different modules. Each of the modules we have are designed to serve a specific purpose and help you understand a different aspect of being a TEFL teacher. You can freely learn in whatever way is best for you. We offer a mix of written, audio and video content so it is pretty easy to develop the kind of learning experience that works for you.Â
We set out to provide a full education in the fine art of teaching and try to equip you for what can often be the daunting task of teaching students by giving you lessons on structuring your curriculum and teaching grammar, among other things.Â
Something which we often find is that typical completion for the course is as little as four weeks, but these figures are based on full-time study. Therefore, you’ve got the full six months to complete your study because we know that most people don’t have full-time hours to commit to learning. We’d rather you process things properly instead of rushing through the content.

1-3 Modules One-Three:
Module One: How to Make Sense of Teacher/Learner Needs
In the first module of the course we take a proper look at how to make sense of learner needs. Understanding why your students need to learn English to start with can directly influence the way that you build lessons and do things, so it is worth getting to grips with that. We also provide the beginnings of an education into the English language.Â
Module Two: How to Understand and Use Grammatical & Teaching Terminology
In the second module of the course we take a proper look at how you can teach grammar to your students. Grammar is a tricky task to try and master so it makes total sense that your students aren’t confident with it.Â
Therefore, we strive to ensure that you’re ready for this part of teaching by helping you to become a grammar expert. You’ll learn all about how grammar is used in different places and how you can teach students in a way that you’ll feel confident with and they’ll understand. As a side note, we don’t make you take a quiz for this until later, because it’s a lot to get your head around.
Module Three: How to Plan Your Syllabus & Lessons
In the third module, you’ll learn all about how to design and plan lessons around a syllabus. You need to be able to make structured content which will suit your responsibilities, and we help with this by teaching you different planning tools, and how to work to a syllabus. We also show you how to control a classroom which is one of the harder things you’ll need to do.
-
4-6 Modules Four-Six:
Module Four: How to Teach Grammar
In the fourth module, we go through grammar again, but this time we take a proper deep dive into the world of grammar and look at how it can make a big difference to your students. We also look at official tests to see how effectively you’re grasping the course materials now, so be ready.Â
Module Five: How to Teach Vocabulary
Now that you’ve gone through the fifth module in the course, you are ready to start looking at vocabulary. This is the midway point, so the concepts that we introduce after this will be a little bit harder to get your head around, but don’t worry, we make it easier to study. Did you know that there are roughly 171,000 words in the English language? Well, you will only have to teach a few hundred of them as part of the course, as we show you how to make vocabulary easy and accessible for your students.
Module Six: How to Teach PronunciationÂ
So, in the sixth module, we look at pronunciation and how it can make a big difference to teaching. Your students will naturally gravitate towards you as a role model for how to pronounce words and get difficult terms nailed, so we help you to master pronunciation and also how to teach pronunciation as a lesson.Â
-
7-10 Modules Seven-Ten:
Module Seven: How to Teach Reading & Listening Skills
The seventh module of the course is all about receptive skills, specifically listening and reading. These help students to receive language, and once you’ve finished up with this module, you’ll feel confident delivering lessons in receiving language through speaking and listening.Â
Module Eight:Â How to teach Writing & Speaking Skills
In the eighth module we get into productive skills, which help with producing language. You’ll learn how to teach writing and speaking, both of which are key parts of any English skillset.Â
We help you to give students the specific tools that they need to thrive in this specific arena. You’ll be ready to teach these skills and feel confident doing so.Â
Module Nine: How to Teach English for Specific Purposes
In the ninth module of the course we take a look at how to teach English for a specific purpose, which is known most commonly as ESL. It’s important to understand that all of your students will be learning English for a specific purpose and this can heavily influence why they learn and how you teach them. Your job will be to tailor lessons to a specific need and see how you can help students grow and develop.Â
Throughout this module we take a look at how you can teach English for specific purposes and how you grow as a teacher during this process.
Module Ten: How to Move from Learning to Earning
In the final module of the course, we look at how you can move into teaching and expand your earnings to build a career as a teacher. We show you how to find jobs and build up a career, and if you need to take advantage of some industry connections, then we’re happy to let you use ours to start picking up jobs.Â
Accreditation
The 120-hour course is one of our most demanded qualifications, but a lot of what we do has been accredited specifically by Highfield Qualifications, who are a close partner of UK regulator Ofqual. We have worked hard for many years to achieve accreditation in the way we have and we’re happy with our status. Naturally, we also go through the rigorous process of staying accredited every year or so. Considering that our qualifications can be used all over the world, we do consider it to be have been well worth attaining.Â
The Open and Distance Learning Quality Council has been operating since 1969. They are a company who works in America and strives to provide accreditation for distance learning. To do this, they have created a series of in-house proprietary criteria that can be used to verify the quality offered by providers. We’ve worked hard to achieve accreditation status and regularly retest to make sure we are still compliant, so you can be sure that we are delivering the best for you.Â
The Vital Consular is not an accreditation so much as a verification seal, and the difference between accreditation and verification is important enough that we feel a need to discuss it.
As you know, we have worked very hard to be a verified provider across the world. We’re proud of the fact that you can take any of our qualifications and use them to get a job working from your home in the Netherlands or anywhere else. There’s no limit to what you can and cannot do with a qualification, which is exactly what we strive to offer when we set out as providers. As part of this, we have registered for this completely optional verification where all of the courses we offer are regulated and approved by the British government.Â
So, this means if you try and go somewhere like China or Taiwan, then you’ll be able to say that you have official UK verification on your qualifications, and this will help you with applying for a visa or permit. In some places, unless your qualifications are authenticated by a legitimate authority, they are not valid. Thankfully, we’ve made it so you can avoid this particular problem with any of our qualifications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can do a TEFL course?
First and foremost, an aspiring TEFL teacher must be outgoing and confident, and not afraid to make themselves look a little silly, especially when teaching children. Expression is a huge part of the methodologies to be able to get your point across. You’ll warm up to this in time and it all takes practice.Â
What can I do with my TEFL certificate?
As a TEFL qualified teacher, the world is your oyster. Our 120 hour TEFL certificate is fully accredited and internationally recognized, meaning you can teach online or around the globe. If you are looking to teach in your home country at a language center or would like to go to the UAE, we would suggest you doing our higher level qualification, our 180 hour level 5 TEFL course, as this is the requirement in such competitive countries.
What is the difference between the 120 hour TEFL course and the 180 hour level 5 TEFL course?
Both courses are your main TEFL qualification and give you the opportunity to start your ESL career. However, there are a few differences between them and the right choice will depend on your story and goals.
The 120 hour TEFL course is the minimum standard around the world. It is a lovely laid out course with 10 modules outlined in the course content. This certification can be used primarily to teach online and travel the world. It is the fastest route to getting a qualification.
The 180 hour course is a level 5 qualification and can be compared to a CELTA or TrinityTESOL. This course is harder and longer to complete, but worth it in the end as it opens up so many opportunities. This course should be taken if you’d like to teach in your home country or certain places in Asia.
Do I need to be a teacher to teach English abroad?
You do not need any prior teaching degrees or experience to teach abroad. Once you have your TEFL certificate, you are 100% able to work as a TEFL teacher. A B.Ed. will of course help your resume, but it is definitely not necessary.
How are the courses laid out?
Our courses are filled with course content, videos, podcasts, reflective tasks, and tests. They are online courses and can be completed in your own time and from home.
Our 120 hour TEFL course has 10 modules with a multiple choice test at the end of each module. You will need 80% to pass. We offer free retests, so if you fail the first time, simply go through your coursework again and retake the test. All examinations are completed online and at your own pace. You are given 6 months to complete the course to accommodate for people who have full-time jobs and dependents, but ultimately it doesn’t take this long.
Are the courses accredited?
The TEFL Institute of Ireland holds accreditation from several reputable organizations, ensuring the quality and recognition of its courses. Here are the accreditations and recognitions:
- Highfield Qualifications: The TEFL Institute of Ireland is an approved training center by Highfield Qualifications, an independent awarding organization approved by Ofqual (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) in the UK.
- Open and Distance Learning Quality Council (ODLQC): The TEFL Institute of Ireland is accredited by ODLQC, which ensures that the provider maintains high standards in distance learning education through rigorous assessment and external monitoring.
These accreditations and recognitions demonstrate that The TEFL Institute of Ireland’s courses meet stringent quality standards and are recognized internationally. Graduates can be confident that their qualifications are reputable and globally accepted in the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
Are the certificates included in the price?
All of our accredited courses include a PDF version of the certificate. This is perfect for applying for jobs online or abroad. Sometimes, perhaps for visa reasons, you may need a hardcopy. We have options available, but there is an extra cost for print and postage.
