You won’t need a degree to teach English online. None of our courses demand that you have a degree or base their completion on getting one. Once you’ve become qualified to be a TEFL teacher, you have two main routes you can go down – you can work for a school online or become a freelancer who runs a business. In either case, you’ll find options which don’t demand a degree, just your new TEFL skills. Check out Latin Hire and Cambly for non-degree teaching options.
As with any job, your starting salary is shaped by your experience and what you’re prepared to do. Most new TEFL teachers start at the equivalent of $10-12 per hour. If you improve your rating, then you’ll be able to earn more, and if you go freelance and can keep the work coming in, you’ll be able to earn up to $35 per hour or more.
All of the TEFL qualifications which we offer are good courses to take. However, if we had to recommend one specific course, we’d suggest the Level 5 TEFL Course. It is a CELTA-equivalent certification accredited by Highfield, which Ofqual backs
Our qualifications are recognised and approved all over the world. When you complete a course, you can teach English in Canada, the UK, the US or anywhere else. Our Level 5 course – 180 hours of study – is DEAC Approved. The DEAC works with the US Department of Education, so they only approve the best of the best.
Our Level 5 TEFL Courses are all approved by the DEAC AQC Curriculum Approval Scheme. This includes the 180-hour, 4 x 60-hour and 300-hour courses. These qualifications have all met the criteria for approval from the DEAC, which means they’ve been subject to considerable judgement and evaluation. This is the same benchmark for quality used by the US Department of Education. That’s how you know that this is a course which will help to give you a good education because you know that a lot of time and work has gone into getting this approval, and we will be retested regularly to make sure that we’re still meeting the quality guidelines.
One thing we need to stress you should look for in a TEFL course is that the company offering it has an Ofqual-regulated certification – like our Level 5 course. This is your guarantee that the course content, materials and overall teaching are the highest quality. There are other options for accreditation, but we recommend this as a guideline for all prospective providers. Furthermore, you must ensure you get 120 hours of training as a minimum because this is the industry standard.
TEFL stands for Teaching English as a foreign language. You’ll be teaching non-native English speakers how to speak the language without the need for translation tools. A good TEFL teacher needs to have the knowledge and know-how necessary to teach in the right way. For this reason, a teacher will need to do a course and get a qualification to go and teach anywhere in the world. Your main options as a TEFL teacher will be to teach English online on a one-to-one basis or in classroom environments. The TEFL industry is extensive.
We don’t put any rules on people taking our courses. As long as you’re over the age of 18 and speak English well, you can participate in our classes. It’s as simple as that.
No, you don’t need a diploma to teach English abroad. Most employers will take the 120 hours of accredited TEFL training, which is the internationally recognised standard. However, a TEFL diploma will help your employment chances and give you more opportunities.
If you’re going to be a TEFL teacher, then you need to be outgoing and confident because you’ll be working with either kids or adults who need a proper education. A big part of the method we use for teaching involves helping you to project yourself as being a natural teacher. This can take practice to get right. Our TEFL teachers need to be at least 16 to work natively and have a C1 level of English proficiency. You can take our free English test to work out your ability if you’re not sure about it.
There are a lot of qualifications and courses you can take with us. Picking the right one for you might be tricky for a new teacher-to-be. The best thing you can do is look at the different options. For example, if you meet these criteria, you’d be a good fit for the 120-hour course:
- You have a minimum of a BA degree in any subject.
- You’re a native English speaker who has a passport in the US, UK, Canada, NZ, SA, Ireland or Australia.
- You’re looking for work in a country with a high demand for TEFL teachers.
However, if you’re someone who meets more of these criteria, then you’re a better fit for the Level 5 course:
- You don’t have a degree or previous teaching experience.
- English is not your first language, and you don’t have a passport from one of the above countries.
- You want to work in a country where the industry is competitive, and you don’t feel confident about your teaching ability.
Your TEFL qualifications last for a lifetime. You can improve your skill set at any point.
You don’t need to speak another language for the bulk of TEFL jobs. Not having another language at your fingertips isn’t going to stop you from teaching English in other countries because you’ll be encouraging students to speak in English. You might find that speaking another language is a requirement for a couple of languages, but most of the time, you don’t need to worry.
If you’re looking for a new career teaching English abroad, or you just want to travel, then a TEFL certificate is the best way to do this. If you do it online, you’re not tied to a specific place either. We offer you the freedom to study from anywhere. You’ve got the freedom to pick and choose whatever works for you.
The most important thing for any non-native English speaker is that you take a look at the visa requirements for the country you want to go to. There are specific rules if you don’t come from an English-speaking country like the UK or US. However, it’ll just involve a couple of extra steps to prove your ability and then you’ll be allowed to teach wherever you’d like.
