Your South Korean Adventure: Teaching English in a New Light

During your six-month placement, you’ll have the chance to help young students improve their English skills while exploring the cultural gems South Korea has to offer. From festivals and concerts to delicious food and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, there’s always something exciting to discover.

This enriching experience will not only help you develop as a teacher but also give you a unique opportunity to connect with a new culture and make lasting memories. Whether you’re looking for a short-term adventure or a way to dip your toes into teaching abroad, this six-month placement in South Korea could be the start of something unforgettable.

What’s required before applying?
  • Passport holder from one of the following countries: USA, Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland, South Africa or New Zealand (contact an advisor if you're a non-native English speaker)
  • South African applicants are required to provide 10 years' proof of schooling in English Instruction (grade 7 and onwards)
  • Bachelor's degree from native-English speaking country (official hardcopy is essential)
  • 120-hour TEFL certificate (included)
  • Criminal background check (from all countries lived in over 18)
  • Be aged between 21 - 35 (contact an advisor if you're older)
  • Clean bill of health for in-country medical check (inform an advisor of any conditions, treatments, or medication before booking)
  • Open-minded, enthusiastic, and flexible on preferences
What do I need to organize?
  • Legalisation of bachelor's degree. Costs may vary.
  • Visa application. Cost varies by country.
  • Return flights are a must. Booking recommended after visa approval.
  • Spending money until your first pay check.
  • Proof of clean criminal record within 6 months.
  • Vaccines are recommended. Consult your GP or local travel clinic for costs.
  • Comprehensive travel and medical insurance are recommended. Consult your current provider or a comparison site for costs.

Your trip Itinerary

Travel to Incheon airport (ICN)  where you will take a short taxi ride to your orientation hotel.

Upon your arrival at the school, an induction is organised to help you settle into your school. You will receive important information about school policies, procedures, and resources available to you. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to review lesson plans and curriculum expectations to ensure a smooth transition into your teaching role, as well as meet your fellow teachers.

Private schools, also known as Hagwons, have fewer classes and usually offer after-school activities in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings.

Your students will be largely young elementary and primary school students with a mixed level of English ability, providing you with a fantastic first-time teaching experience. During your 40-hour work week, you can expect to spend roughly 30 hours on hands-on teaching, allowing you time to develop lessons based on the in-house curriculum. Your main goal will be to help your eager pupils gain confidence as they improve their English skills through conversational English practice.

You’ll get the opportunity to seek assistance from local educators, but don’t forget to implement your own creative abilities in the classroom; this is your moment to shine!

By renewing your contract, you may be able to extend your stay in Korea and continue teaching. As a confident and experienced TEFL teacher, the opportunities are limitless for you.

    On top of your free time exploring while teaching English in South Korea, you can take part in two cultural orientations throughout the year. These classes and excursions will take place over three consecutive weekends.

    The rent-free accommodation you will live in is your typical Asian-style accommodation, complete with a kitchenette, and you get it all to yourself! The internet in South Korea is one of the fastest in the world, and relatively cheap.

    Work Schedule

    Approximately 20 -30 teaching hours per week but 40 hour work weeks and 5 days a week. If you are
    required to work an extra day, that will be considered overtime. You will be required to lesson plan on
    the school’s property. Your shifts and time of days depends on the age group you are teaching as well
    as the type of school you end up in.

    I recently completed the 30-Hour Teaching Business English Course, and I learned so many interesting and useful things about how to plan, prepare, and create effective lessons.The course provides lots of valuable PDFs, videos, and links that allow you to explore the topics in greater depth and continue learning even after completing the course.I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge, develop their teaching skills, and strengthen their potential as a Business English teacher!I also completed their “Using Generative AI in TEFL” course, which was very useful, especially because they recommended many AI teaching apps and websites that I had never heard of before.And when it comes to AI, the rule is always the same: create a good, well-written prompt and then refine it as necessary!

    Really good course that you can complete in your own time! I found it very manageable and my Tutor marked all work very quickly! Within 1 day! Also, feedback is really detailed so if you do have any corrections to make, it is clear where you need to look (modules etc.) To fix it.Would recommend TEFL Institute to anyone interested in doing a TEFL course :)

    I’ve almost finished my 300-hour TEFL Diploma with this fantastic institution, and honestly, I’m much more impressed than I expected!     A relaxed yet buzzed up, non intimidating environment that lent itself to learning easily.     I had an excellent experience with The TEFL Institute whilst completing my 180 Hour Diploma and learnt so much. There was a broad focus on both face-to-face and online teaching. This made the course useful for different settings. The in-depth study of the various lesson structures has equipped me to plan lessons accordingly. Plus, throughout the modules, the amount of additional websites offered really helped to point me in the right direction, most of which would use in the future.My tutor, Laura Graham, was easily available when I needed to communicate with her and she was extremely quick to assess my work. She gave clear positive feedback and provided ongoing support and encouragement. I felt very confident in Laura as a tutor. She was always more than happy to advise. Laura was so easy to converse and so friendly. There were occasions when Laura responded to my queries late at night when I did not think i would get a reply until the next day. She most definitely is not a 9-5 tutor. When I had been having difficulty with the platform, without hesitation, she added additional time. It was so clear that Laura is dedicated to her role and I really appreciated this.When I needed to freeze my course, the institute was so accommodating and did so without question and without charge. Also, whenever I needed to make contact, John was very helpful.I would most certainly recommend The Irish Institute.
