The story
From cruise liners to the largest TEFL trainer in the E.U.
My route into TEFL was not a straight line. My father was a dairy manager, and my mother a ward sister, and between them I had two things hammered into me as a child: work hard, and be honest in every dealing you have. It was a tough upbringing, but those two rules have carried me through everything since.
I spent my early career travelling the world working on cruise liners, then volunteering in Costa Rica. That was where I first saw what English opens up for people, on both sides of the classroom.
I moved to Ireland 33 years ago and fell in love with the place. My parents and all my siblings were born in Inch, Co Kerry, so in truth it was less a move than a homecoming.
In 2002 I became Ireland country director for one of the world’s largest TEFL companies. I learned the industry from the inside for years, then went into partnership to build another TEFL venture. And the more I saw of the industry, the more one thing bothered me.
TEFL companies wanted to sell you a course and wave goodbye.
By 2017 the market was saturated with low quality providers. Nobody was telling would-be teachers the truth about what a real qualification takes, what jobs actually pay, or what happens after you hand over your money. So I founded The TEFL Institute of Ireland to be the opposite of that: real quality, with a caring and honest nature at the heart of it.
That one company has grown into The TEFL Institute Group, now Europe’s largest TEFL trainer by teachers certified. Along the way:
- 161,000 teachers certified, now working in 80 countries.
- Partnerships in more than 22 countries, with our global footprint expanding rapidly.
- Ofqual regulation was completed in 2022, a long and tedious process that was worth every day of it. It means our Level 5 qualification is checked by a UK government regulator rather than a logo we invented ourselves, and you can look it up yourself on the Ofqual register under qualification number 610/1571/4.
People ask what holds a group of brands and a busy office together. For us, it is integrity, and our foundation is built on transparency, whatever the consequences. That is not a poster on the wall. It is the main driver for every person who works here. It decides:
- How do we write a course page,
- How do we answer a hard question from a student,
- What we refuse to sell.
We are all down-to-earth, hardworking, caring people with our customers at heart. Hire people like that, tell them the truth is the product, and the rest of the culture takes care of itself.
If you ask me who I credit for all this, my honest answer is everyone I’ve ever come into contact with. Everyone has taught me something along the journey. And this company would not be here without my shipmates from those cruise liner years, who taught me more about people than any classroom ever could.

Q&A
How I see the future
Q.Will AI replace English teachers?
No, and I would say that even if I had not built an AI company. What AI replaces is the drudgery of teaching: the midnight lesson planning, the grading, the admin. The human part, a teacher noticing a student is lost and finding another way in, is nowhere near replaceable. But teachers who use AI will replace teachers who refuse to. That is why we built the AI Skilled Teacher Certificate and made the assessment free. I would rather our graduates be the ones holding the advantage.
Q.Why did you build tefl.ai when most of the industry was ignoring AI?
Because ignoring it is what the industry did with online learning, with job market shifts, with everything. I have watched TEFL companies react late for twenty years. For once, I wanted our teachers to be early. tefl.ai gives them free tools and honest guidance on teaching in an AI world, and it keeps us learning too. You cannot advise teachers on the future while hiding from it yourself.
Q.Where do you see TEFL as an industry in five years?
Smaller in providers and bigger in standards, I hope. The certificate-mill era is ending because students can now verify claims in seconds, and AI systems can answer their questions with sources. Providers who spent years making vague accreditation claims will not survive that transparency. Demand for English is not going anywhere, though. If anything, AI is raising the value of spoken, human English. The winners will be teachers with regulated qualifications and the honesty to market themselves truthfully.
Q.What does The TEFL Institute Group look like in 2030?
The same values with a longer reach. We are expanding rapidly, with partnerships in more than 22 countries already, and there is more to come. But the goal was never to be the biggest TEFL company. It was to be the one people trust, and trust does not scale by cutting corners. So in 2030, I want the same honesty on a bigger scale: more graduates in more countries, deeper support after certification rather than just before payment, and a bigger role for the free resources, job briefings, AI tools, and the community.
Q.What would you tell someone hesitating about getting certified today?
Ask every provider you are considering three questions. Who regulates your course? What does the job market actually pay in the country I want? What support do I get after I qualify? If they dodge any of those, walk away, including from us. Hesitation usually comes from being sold at rather than being informed. Get informed, and the decision makes itself.
Q.What is the one thing you would change about the TEFL industry?
The goodbye wave. The industry habit of taking your money and disappearing. Everything we have built, the career support, the jobs briefing, the free tools, exists because I believe the moment you qualify is when a TEFL company should get more useful, not less.
