Accreditation
The Level 5 courses which we offer at the TEFL Institute are all regulated worldwide by Highfield Qualifications, a group operating in the UK. Highfield works directly with UK regulator Ofqual, which is one of the most prestigious regulatory bodies in the country. Their approval certifies that the qualification we offer is suitable for use worldwide. It is a key tool for applying for jobs or securing a visa. If you want to vire a general overview of the units, please examine the Highfield Level 5 Certificate in Teaching as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or visit the Ofqual website.
The Accreditation Council for Distance Learning
The Accreditation Council for Distance Learning – ACDL – is an accrediting body which specializes in distance learning courses. Their ethos is about promoting the highest standards of excellence among their providers, and it gives a key seal of approval which assures students we are ACDL-accredited. Our accreditation number for anyone who wants to verify us independently is 2854-2540.
The Vital Consular is not an accreditation so much as a ‘verification seal’. The TEFL Institute is based in the UK and, as a result, is a verified UK provider. This means that any of the courses you study with us both in Canada and abroad are suitable for use overseas.
The purpose of the verification scheme is to ensure that all of our qualifications are recognised by the UK government – a globally acknowledged body. This is not a scheme all TEFL providers sign up for. However, if you intend to visit somewhere like Taiwan, China or Vietnam, this becomes useful. You will need to legalize documents for the sake of getting a visa, so having UK Government verification is key to ensuring this process is quick, easy and free of complications.
We’re a TEFL provider which is recognised around the world. Our academic team has been responsible for not only developing but also accrediting and delivering courses which are government-regulated and suitable for use worldwide – they’re just as valid in Canada as in the UK or Asia. We have built up a reputation for being a high-caliber training provider and one of the top-ranked global TEFL companies.
The Open and Distance Learning Quality Council is a group founded in the US back in 1969. The group has evolved and grown over the years (with a name change along the way) but has remained steadfast in its mission to identify and protect the quality of learning available for people all over the world. Their goal is to safeguard the learner’s interests.
The standards which they provide accreditation for are defined and regulated by the Council. Anyone who meets their standards is welcome to apply but will be subject to constant observation. We’re pleased to have gained and kept accreditation.
Why Us
The TEFL Institute is committed to your TEFL journey, and from the moment you decide that you want to be able to teach English as a foreign language, we are here to support you and your needs. We feel that you should be supported, and that’s a goal which we are committed to no matter what you need. Frequently Asked Questions
What does Level 5 mean?
A Level 5 TEFL Course is one which has gained Ofqual regulation and accreditation. The Level 5 course is equivalent to a CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and once you’ve gained this qualification, you’ll be able to teach the most qualified jobs around the world.
What does regulated mean?
A regulated qualification is one which has been recognized by the UK Government and also exists on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.
What is a TEFL certification?
The most commonly accepted certificate around the world is the TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate. This qualification is your key to teaching English to a wealth of non-native speakers around the world. You will have the ability to speak English at a native level and have successfully completed a TEFL course to be qualified. The course difficulty and prestige are denoted by the time it takes to finish.
How do I get a TEFL certificate?
To get a TEFL qualification, you will need to complete the 120-hour course as a minimum requirement. You can choose between our range of fully accredited TEFL courses, filter based on which ones are government-regulated and fully accredited, and view all the courses we offer on the website.
An online TEFL course is considered the most affordable and flexible way to launch a teaching career in Canada or beyond. You can study at your own pace and whenever you’re free. However, we do offer a combined course which uses both in-class and online studying. You can get both theoretical and practical education, learn theory through the online material, and then practice during a 10-hour practical session.
You should follow these guidelines to choose a TEFL certificate:
- Ensure your qualification is fully accredited and recognized globally.
- Check to ensure you get at least 120 hours of training.
- Identify if you’ll get support and assistance from a tutor.
- Make sure that your qualification is approved by an official body in the provider’s home country and your own.
- Check online for feedback to ensure the provider is of good quality.
- Find out if you’ll get job support after you finish the qualification.
What is the difference between TEFL/TESOL/CELTA?
TEFL
TEFL stands for Teaching English as a foreign language. It is the most commonly accepted certificate globally and allows you to teach English to non-native speakers. You’ll need to speak English at a native level and complete a 120-hour course as a minimum requirement. You can learn in a classroom or online, and more advanced courses are available.
TESOL
TESOL, or TESL in some places, is Teaching English as a Second Language. In this setting, you will be teaching English in your home country to those who have moved to or want to live in an English-speaking country. In other words, you’re helping to teach English to people who are surrounded by the language and will be using it every day outside the classroom setting. This is different to TEFL, which focuses on teaching students in their home country only.
CELTA
CELTA is an acronym for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and is considered to be an elite certification. You will be required to complete a 120-hour course and also spend six hours teaching in a real environment. These courses are full-time and take place over one month in most cases. However, you may find that some courses are part-time and are spread out across three months. The CELTA program is required to follow a strict set of rules created by Cambridge University. Therefore, due to the intense nature of the course, the costs are much higher.
What does TEFL stand for?
TEFL is an acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. TEFL courses are the most commonly accepted worldwide qualifications.
Which TEFL course to take?
It is perfectly normal to be confused about which TEFL course is right for you. As long as you can speak English fluently or at a native level, you’re qualified for most, if not all, of the courses we offer.
We do caution that non-native English speakers may sometimes find the Level 5 course to be challenging, and that’s why we encourage anyone who is unsure to take our free English language test to find out how proficient in the language you are before you start. We suggest that you rack up a 6.5 score on the test to be comfortable in taking a TEFL course.
Do I need a Bachelor’s degree to take a TEFL course?
You do not need to have a degree to be able to start a TEFL course. This is a common question, and the answer is that anyone fluent in English can enroll on the course to earn their TEFL qualification.
You should still be aware that a lot of places need a work permit – like Japan and Korea – and that permit will require a degree. However, there are still plenty of places which you can explore without a degree. Even if you do see an employer who prefers degree holders, it is worth applying for courses, as you may have the skills necessary for the position without holding a formal qualification.
What’s the difference between Accredited TEFL Courses vs Government Regulated Level 5 TEFL Courses?
We get many questions about the differences between courses. To provide a good example, we’ll look at the difference between the 120-hour and 180-hour Level 5 course.
The 120-Hour Course
This is our fast-track course designed to get you teaching quickly. It is the minimum qualification recognized around the world.
You will have 10 modules to complete with a deadline of six months. The course takes, on average, four to six weeks to complete. The course has a multiple-choice test at the end of each module. You will need 80% to pass the course.
You will get a digital certificate once you complete the course. A physical certificate is available to purchase.
The 180-Hour Level 5 Course
This course is Ofqual-regulated. It is a UK Government-regulated course which has 11 modules. It will take 10 – 12 weeks to complete the course. As the course is regulated by the UK Government, you will need to get a 100% pass mark on all assessments. Our academic team will review your answers to all assessments and ask you to retake any which you did not pass. In some cases, you’ll need to submit an academic reference for the questions.
Once you have completed the 11th module, you will get a digital coursework completion certificate. Once you have been successfully assessed by the academic team, you will be able to claim a license for your Ofqual-approved certificate. This course is for people who want a high-level qualification
What are the benefits of completing a Level 5 TEFL Course?
The Level 5 TEFL Diploma is a globally-recognised, government-regulated TEFL qualification. It is at the same level as both a CELTA qualification and a Trinity Cert TESOL qualification. This qualification has 180 hours of course content, making it more than the recognized minimum and thus an elite qualification which is more competitive
What’s the age restriction to take a TEFL course?
There are no age restrictions to complete a TEFL course. If you are 16 years old or more, then technically you can start a course. However, you usually need to be at least 18 to get a job working abroad.
Who are the ACDL?
The Accreditation Council for Distance Learning is an accreditation body which focuses on providing accreditation for distance learning. We’re proud to have gained accreditation from them. Our accreditation number is 2854-2540. You are welcome to verify it for yourself.
What does Ofqual stand for?
Ofqual is The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Registration. They are responsible for regulating examinations, assessments and qualifications in the UK.
Am I too old to teach English abroad?
There is no age limit on gaining a new TEFL qualification. A handful of employers may place an age restriction on their positions – most will not. However, you can still forge a career in a number of ways so it is worth pursuing this career path.
Do I need to speak another language to teach English abroad?
You don’t need to speak another language to teach English abroad. It’s possible to live and work in many parts of the world without knowing the local language. However, you’ll likely pick up some language skills through everyday exposure. We recommend learning a few essential phrases before you move, as this will help you navigate your new environment and settle in more easily.
Which course to take if I only would like to focus on teaching English online?
If your primary goal is to teach online, then we recommend you look into the 180-Hour TEFL Course we offer. If you want to become a specialist, then you can improve your skill set via exploring some of the following courses:
- Teaching Young Learners
- Teaching Business English
