Teaching English in Taiwan
Pumped up for the beautiful country of Taiwan? Now we’d like to go through why teaching English in Taiwan is a great choice!
ESL teachers are looked at respectfully in Taiwan. The children are very enthusiastic about learning and will listen to your every word! It is an absolute joy to work in Taiwan and you will love every second of it.
The teacher salary versus cost of living in Taiwan is a seriously nice balance. You will earn enough to live comfortably and save a bit for your future or even more travelling. While teaching English in Taiwan, you can pay off your school loans or save for a trip around the world if you live frugally, which is easy in Taiwan. Regardless of your pay, you’ll be able to live a life that permits you to make more money rather than merely break even.
Teacher contracts in Taiwan do come with many benefits. Schools will normally cover everything from visa expenses to continuous training and teacher group excursions. You would take a step back and wonder why would they put the money and time forward for the sake of filling a position in a school. Well, there’s a simple answer! ESL teachers in Taiwan are high in demand. As well as it being one of the less known destinations to teach in, it also comes with some strict requirements, so finding the right candidate can be difficult – but more on that later.
Teaching Requirements in Taiwan
ESL teachers in Taiwan are high in demand, and schools are looking for teachers all year round as they have a variety of schools from public to private to language centres. To teach in a Taiwanese school, you must first get the work permit! This is the biggest hurdle, so here are the list of requirements you’ll need to know:
As well as a TEFL certificate to teach in the school, you’ll also be required to have a degree for the work permit. Because it is only for visa reasons, the degree can be in any discipline. Pre-pandemic, they were accepting both a Bachelor’s degree and an associate’s degree. However, post-pandemic, the associate’s degree is getting a little trickier! If you have had an offer or would like to check for Taiwanese opportunities with the TEFL Institute, feel free to send your degree to us to double check! The government also has a selected list of universities that they accept, so if you got your degree through the military or private institution, you’ll need to check this out too.
Due to government regulations, you must have a passport from an English speaking country to be eligible to obtain a work permit. Accepted applications are from people from the following countries:
This is very strict! Unfortunately the government of Taiwan will not accept any criminal offence. If something shows up, even from a while back, your visa will get rejected.
This is the majority of the requirements needed for the work permit, but they may ask for extra documents or official document translation on a case-by-case basis.
Tick the boxes? Great! You’ll be able to apply for a working visa. Extra requirements and preferabilities of schools will include enthusiasm, working on your own initiative, and ability to lead a classroom. Once you have these characteristics, then the rest will follow! One thing that’s great about Taiwan is that most schools don’t require experience. So, if you have ambition and love to become an ESL teacher, they will help you with lesson plans and continuous training.
How to get there
The Taiwan government won’t give out working permits lightly. You cannot hop on a plane with a tourist visa, land a job and get it converted to a working visa. The Taiwanese government only issues Taiwan work permits to specific categories of workers. Additionally, before you can even apply for a Taiwan work visa, you must first have a job offer in Taiwan.
Once you secure a job offer and invitation letter, you can then apply for a visa. The hiring program or school will hopefully help you through the process. Our supported job does help you through the whole process, making the move easier and a lot less stressful.
We recommend not booking flights until you have everything in order. During and after the pandemic, international post, like international travel has been slow and taking your time with the process will definitely help you. Your school will wait for you if something happens and you cannot get over in time. Remember, you are high in demand! Just don’t take advantage of their kind generosity.
