Teach English in Venezuela

TEFL jobs in Venezuela

Teaching English in Venezuela is not something we recommend planning right now. As of October 2026, the UK advises against all travel to Zulia state and to the area south of the Orinoco river, including the Orinoco Mining Arc, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Venezuela because of ongoing crime and instability. It says it cannot provide support in areas where it advises against all travel. Travel insurance is usually invalid if you go against official advice. If you want to teach Venezuelan learners, the safest options for now are to teach online or to teach in nearby Colombia, Ecuador or Peru.

Is it safe to teach English in Venezuela?

Not at the moment. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to Zulia state and to the area south of the Orinoco river, including the Orinoco Mining Arc, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Venezuela because of ongoing crime and instability. It advises avoiding all demonstrations, warns that the situation can affect your ability to leave the country, and says it cannot provide support in areas where it advises against all travel. Violent crime is a serious risk, and power cuts can disrupt daily life. The UK only lifted its advice against all travel to the whole country in March 2026. Always read the latest advice from your own government before you decide anything.

What was the English teaching market like in Venezuela?

In more stable times, Venezuela had demand for English from students, professionals and the oil industry, with language institutes, bilingual and international schools and universities in Caracas and other cities. Years of economic crisis and political instability since the 2010s led many institutions and foreign teachers to leave, and millions of Venezuelans have emigrated, many to neighbouring countries.

What qualifications would you need?

Employers have generally asked for a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours, with international schools wanting a teaching licence. Because the security situation and entry rules can change quickly, confirm everything with the Venezuelan embassy, any employer and your own government’s travel advice if you are ever offered a post. A regulated qualification is useful wherever you teach, and our Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma can be verified on the Ofqual register.

How can you teach Venezuelan learners safely?

Online teaching is the safest route. Many Venezuelans, at home and among the millions living abroad, study English online for work and study, though power cuts can interrupt lessons inside the country. Our guide to online English teaching jobs explains who hires and what they pay. Neighbouring Colombia hosts a large Venezuelan community, and teaching there can also mean working with Venezuelan learners.

Where else could you teach in Latin America?

Colombia, Venezuela’s neighbour, has a growing TEFL market in Bogotá and Medellín; see our guide to teaching English in Colombia. Ecuador and Peru are popular with new teachers, covered in our guides to teaching English in Ecuador and teaching English in Peru, and Mexico has one of the region’s biggest markets, explained in our Mexico guide.

Living costs

Before thinking about living costs in Venezuela, check whether travel is safe and insurable. While official advice is against travel to parts of the country and against all but essential travel to the rest, we do not publish a relocation budget, because we do not recommend moving there to teach for now.

For context, Venezuela has gone through years of economic crisis, with very high inflation, and many prices are quoted in US dollars. Power cuts and fuel shortages can disrupt daily life.

The points below summarise UK government advice as of October 2026. It changes often, so always read the latest guidance from your own government.

  • Advise against all travel: Zulia state, and the area south of the Orinoco river including the Orinoco Mining Arc
  • All but essential travel: The rest of Venezuela, because of crime and instability
  • Crime: Violent crime is a serious risk across the country
  • Protests: Avoid all demonstrations
  • Consular help: No support where the UK advises against all travel
  • Travel insurance: Usually invalid where official advice is against travel
  • Daily life: Power cuts and fuel shortages can disrupt daily life
  • Safer options: Teach online, or in Colombia, Ecuador or Peru

Not at the moment. The UK government advises against all travel to Zulia state and to the area south of the Orinoco river, including the Orinoco Mining Arc, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Venezuela because of ongoing crime and instability. Yes, online. Many Venezuelans, at home and among the millions living abroad, study English online for work and study, though power cuts can interrupt lessons inside the country. Neighbouring Colombia also hosts a large Venezuelan community. Our guide to online English teaching jobs explains who hires and what they pay.

Often not. Travel insurance is usually invalid where your government advises against travel, and the UK government says it cannot provide support in areas where it advises against all travel. Read your policy carefully and check your own government’s advice before you make any plans.

Colombia, Venezuela’s neighbour, has a growing TEFL market in Bogotá and Medellín; see our guide to teaching English in Colombia. Ecuador and Peru are popular with new teachers, and Mexico has one of the region’s biggest markets. Our guides to Ecuador, Peru and Mexico explain jobs, pay and visas.

Most language schools in Latin America, and most online employers, ask for an accredited TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours, such as our 120 Hour Advanced TEFL Course, and many prefer a degree. An Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma strengthens applications for better paid roles and is recognised wherever you teach.

Yes. We review this guide when official travel advice changes. When governments no longer advise against travel to the main teaching cities, we will restore full information on jobs, pay, visas and living costs. Until then, we do not publish salary figures or relocation budgets for Venezuela.
