What kinds of English teaching jobs are there in Slovakia?
Private language schools. The most common employer, teaching children after school and adults in the evening. Many timetables mix in-school classes with in-company lessons.
Business English. Bratislava has a large base of international companies in automotive, IT and shared services, so business English is in steady demand and pays the best hourly rates.
Bilingual and state schools. Bilingual secondary schools hire some native speaker teachers, usually wanting a degree and a teaching qualification. State schools mostly employ Slovak teachers of English.
Private and online students. A common way to add income on top of a school timetable.
How much do English teachers earn in Slovakia?
Language schools commonly pay by the hour, roughly €10 to €16, with business English at the top of the range and Bratislava paying more than smaller cities. A full-time employment contract must pay at least Slovakia’s minimum wage of €915 a month gross in 2026, and Slovak law sets higher minimums for jobs that need more skill. Living costs outside Bratislava are among the lowest in the euro area, so a teaching salary goes much further in Košice or Žilina. What qualifications do you need to teach English in Slovakia?
Most language schools want a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours and native or near native English. Many prefer a degree, and a degree also helps with a non EU residence permit. Bilingual schools usually ask for a degree and a teaching qualification, and some employers want official translations of your certificates. A criminal record check is standard for work with children. The Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL course can be verified on the Ofqual register.
Which visa do you need to teach English in Slovakia?
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, including Irish passport holders, can live and work in Slovakia freely and register their residence with the foreign police. UK citizens lost that right after Brexit, so UK, US, Canadian and South African teachers need a temporary residence permit for employment, usually a single permit that covers both residence and work and is applied for with a job offer. Young Canadians may be able to work through a youth mobility agreement. Allow several weeks for paperwork, apostilled documents and translations. Check current rules with the Slovak embassy and our Visa Desk before you travel.
Where are the English teaching jobs in Slovakia?
Bratislava, the capital, has the most language schools and business English work and the highest rents, and Vienna is less than an hour away. Košice, the second city, has a strong IT sector and lower costs. Žilina, Banská Bystrica and Nitra have smaller markets, lower rents and easy access to the mountains.
What is it like teaching in Slovakia?
Slovak students are generally polite and hard working, and adults often want practical English for work. Life is affordable outside the capital, public transport is good, and the Tatra mountains, castles and spa towns make for easy weekends. Learning some Slovak helps with daily life and paperwork, especially outside Bratislava.

Living costs
Slovakia is one of the more affordable countries in the euro area, but Bratislava rents have risen and are now the biggest cost for teachers there. Most new teachers share a flat, and Košice, Žilina and other cities are noticeably cheaper.
Public transport is cheap and reliable, and groceries and local restaurants are good value. Heating is the main extra cost in winter, so check whether utilities are included in a rent.

Is Slovakia expensive to live in?
Not by Western European standards. A one-bedroom flat in Bratislava costs roughly €720 to €970 a month, and €500 to €630 in other cities. Public transport and local food are cheap, so sharing a flat or living outside the capital leaves room to save.
Can I teach English in Slovakia without a degree?

What is the best TEFL certificate for teaching in Slovakia?
An accredited TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours, such as our 120 Hour Advanced TEFL Course, is the standard for Slovak language schools, and an Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma or CELTA helps you win the better paid business English work in Bratislava, where corporate clients often ask for a higher level qualification. Our guide to the best TEFL certifications for Europe compares the options in detail.
Can UK citizens teach English in Slovakia after Brexit?
Yes, with a job offer. Since Brexit, UK citizens need a temporary residence permit for employment, usually a single permit covering residence and work, while Irish and other EU citizens can work freely and simply register. Allow several weeks for apostilled documents and translations. Check current rules on our Visa Desk.
Is Bratislava or Košice better for English teachers?
