Teaching English in Sweden: The Salary Rule That Decides It

Sweden is a lovely place to want to live and a difficult place to arrive as an English teacher, and the reasons are specific rather than vague.

Swedes are among the most proficient non-native English speakers in the world. Children start young and are taught by Swedish teachers holding Swedish qualifications. There is no shortage for a native speaker to fill. On top of that, since June 2026 the work permit salary bar has been raised to a level that ordinary teaching work does not reach.

None of which makes Sweden impossible. It makes it a country with a narrow set of real routes, and a passport question that decides which of them apply to you.

The passport question comes first

Irish citizens

EU free movement applies. You may live and work in Sweden on the same terms as a Swedish citizen, with no permit, no salary threshold and no sponsorship. Everything below about the job market still applies to you, but none of the immigration barriers do. If you hold an Irish passport, Sweden is one of the more accessible countries in Europe for you administratively.

UK citizens

Since Brexit, British citizens are third-country nationals. You need a work permit, and this is where the difficulty is.

Sweden raised its salary requirement on 1 June 2026 from 80 per cent to 90 per cent of the national median salary. Statistics Sweden updated the median on 16 June 2026 to SEK 38,300, which puts the current work permit floor at SEK 34,470 a month.

There is a lower tier at 75 per cent of the median, but it applies to a defined list of occupations in the Aliens Ordinance, covering fields such as engineering, IT support, nursing and care work, welding, forestry, agriculture and food processing, plus former students and researchers with Swedish residence permits, healthcare professionals obtaining Swedish credentials, and staff at young tech and life science startups. English language teaching is not on that list.

The same reform added a comprehensive health insurance requirement for permits of up to one year, and brought seasonal and intra-company transfer permits into line with collective agreement minimums.

So the practical question for a British applicant is simply whether an English teaching job in Sweden pays SEK 34,470 a month. Ordinary language school and adult education work does not come close. That is the wall, and no qualification climbs it.

Who teaches English in Sweden

Swedish school teachers. Teaching in a Swedish school is a regulated profession requiring a Swedish teaching qualification and, in practice, working Swedish. This is a career path, not an entry point, and it is not what a TEFL certificate is for.

International schools. Real, but small in number and looking for licensed teachers with classroom experience rather than TEFL holders. Salaries here are among the few in education that would clear the work permit threshold, which is precisely why they can recruit internationally.

Adult education and folk high schools. Sweden has a strong tradition of adult education, and English features in it. Work is typically hourly and part-time, which is good for an EU citizen adding to other income and useless for a non-EU citizen who needs one job to clear a monthly salary floor.

Business English. The most genuinely promising corner. Swedish companies operate internationally and buy corporate language training, often through specialist providers rather than schools. It rewards experience and professional presentation more than entry-level enthusiasm, and much of it is freelance, which again suits someone who already has the right to work.

What it pays

Sweden has no statutory minimum wage. Pay floors are set by sector collective agreements, and where none applies, pay must be what the law calls normal and reasonable.

We are not publishing a single figure for English teaching, because no Swedish authority publishes rates for private and adult English language teaching, and an average of job adverts is not a fact. What is worth knowing is the relationship between two numbers you can check: the national median salary is SEK 38,300, and adult education and language teaching sit well below it. That gap is exactly why the work permit route closes for third-country applicants, and it is a more useful thing to understand than any quoted hourly rate.

Qualifications, honestly assessed

Role What is actually required
Swedish school teacher Swedish teaching qualification and working Swedish. A TEFL certificate does not qualify you
International school Recognised teaching qualification and licensure, usually with post-certification experience
Adult education, folk high schools Employers set their own bar; hourly and part-time, and you need the right to work first
Business English, freelance No licence required. Experience, a professional profile and a specialist qualification carry the weight

Get on the Wire

The Nordic countries share a structural feature that makes them difficult for English teachers: exceptionally high national English proficiency, combined with school systems that treat teaching as a licensed profession requiring a domestic qualification and the national language. There is no shortage for a native speaker to fill, because the shortage does not exist.

We have written the same honest assessment for the country most often asked about alongside Sweden, and the findings rhyme closely. Our guide to teaching English in Finland sets out a market where classroom teaching requires a Master’s degree plus pedagogical studies and C-level Finnish, and where the realistic openings sit in adult education and private language schools rather than schools. If you are considering Sweden, read that one too: between them they will tell you whether the Nordics are a plan or a preference. For a quick reference on where the jobs are, Stockholm living costs and the best time to arrive, see our guide to English teaching jobs in Sweden.

The practical difference between the two for a British applicant is small, and it comes down to the same arithmetic in both cases. The work that exists is hourly and part-time. A work permit requires a single job paying above a national threshold. Those two facts do not meet.

Business English: the one route worth building

If any part of the Swedish market rewards a qualified teacher, it is this one, and it deserves more than the passing mention it usually gets.

Swedish companies operate internationally as a matter of course, and they buy language training for staff who already speak good English but need it to be precise, persuasive and appropriate in professional settings. That is a different skill from general English teaching, and the people who do it well are paid accordingly.

Three things make it distinct from classroom work. It is usually delivered in short intensive blocks rather than terms, which suits freelancing. It is frequently sold through specialist training providers rather than schools, so the route in is a supplier relationship rather than a job application. And it values professional credibility — prior experience in an industry, presentation skills, a specialism — more than it values enthusiasm.

For an Irish or EU passport holder who can simply arrive and work, business English plus adult education plus some online teaching is a realistic composite income in Sweden. For a British passport holder it does not solve the permit problem, because freelance work does not produce the single qualifying salary a permit requires.

What to do if the permit closes the door

For most British readers it will, and the useful response is to redirect rather than to keep pushing.

Look at the European countries built for this. Spain, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic all have genuine volume in private language teaching, hire teachers year-round, and gate entry on qualification rather than salary. We have written the honest legal position for the two most asked about, in teaching English in Spain without a degree and teach English in Italy without a degree. Both explain how much your passport decides before your CV is even read, which is the same lesson Sweden teaches, with a happier ending.

Consider teaching online from wherever you are. It removes the immigration question entirely, because nobody needs to sponsor you. It is also the fastest way to build the teaching hours that make every later application stronger. Our complete guide to teaching English online covers the platforms, what they pay and how the demo lesson is judged.

Get the qualification question straight first. A great deal of confusion in this field comes from the acronyms rather than the rules. If you are unsure whether an employer asking for TESOL, TESL or CELTA means something different from TEFL, our TEFL qualifications and terminology hub settles each one in plain language, and our guide to Level 5 and the Ofqual register explains what regulation does and does not promise you.

Watch the dates, wherever you end up

Sweden has no teaching intake calendar because it has no teaching scheme. Most of the countries worth redirecting to do, and their windows are the thing that decides whether you start this year or next.

We publish a free fortnightly briefing, The Hire Wire, that tracks when the world’s government English teaching programmes open and close, with every figure carrying the date it was last checked against the programme’s own notices. It exists because most guidance explains how to get qualified and almost none tells you that a window shuts in November.

Should you go?

If you hold an Irish or other EU passport, Sweden is worth considering with your eyes open. You can arrive, you can work, and business English plus adult education can be assembled into something real. Expect to build it rather than walk into it, and do not expect a single full-time English teaching job to be waiting.

If you hold only a UK passport, be realistic. Unless you are qualified for the international school sector, or moving for a partner’s job, or already hold Swedish residence through another route, the SEK 34,470 threshold is very likely to end the conversation before a school ever reads your CV.

None of this is a reason to give up on teaching abroad. It is a reason to pick a country whose rules were written with English teachers in mind. In Europe, Spain, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic all have real volume in private language teaching and none gates entry behind a salary floor built for engineers. If Europe is what you want, those are the doors that open.

The TEFL Institute sells TEFL courses. We have told you on this page that a TEFL certificate will not get you a work permit for Sweden, because that is true, and you should know it before you spend anything.

It depends on your passport far more than your qualification. Irish and other EU citizens can work in Sweden freely and can use a TEFL certificate for adult education, business English and private language teaching. UK citizens are third-country nationals and need a work permit, which since June 2026 requires a salary of at least SEK 34,470 a month. English teaching does not pay that, so the qualification is rarely the deciding factor.

From 1 June 2026 the requirement rose from 80 to 90 per cent of the Swedish median salary. Statistics Sweden updated the median on 16 June 2026 to SEK 38,300, which sets the current work permit floor at SEK 34,470 a month. A lower 75 per cent tier exists but applies only to listed occupations such as engineering, IT support, care work, welding, forestry and food processing. English language teaching is not on that list.

Yes. EU free movement means Irish citizens may live and work in Sweden on the same terms as Swedish nationals, with no work permit, no salary threshold and no employer sponsorship. The job market is still narrow, because Swedish English proficiency is very high and school teaching is a regulated profession, but none of the immigration barriers apply.

For a post in a Swedish school, in practice yes, alongside a Swedish teaching qualification, because it is a regulated profession. For adult education, folk high schools, business English and private language teaching, Swedish is helpful for daily life and for winning work, but it is not a formal requirement of the job.

We do not publish a figure, because no Swedish authority sets or publishes rates for private and adult English language teaching, and Sweden has no statutory minimum wage. Pay floors come from sector collective agreements. The useful comparison is that the national median salary is SEK 38,300 a month while adult education and language teaching sit well below it, which is precisely why the work permit route closes for non-EU applicants.

Spain, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic all have substantially more volume in private language teaching, hire teachers year-round, and do not gate entry behind a salary threshold designed for skilled professional migration. For a first teaching job in Europe, any of those is a more realistic starting point than Sweden.
