Teaching English online is worth it as a flexible second income, a way to test teaching before going abroad, or a main income once you have a certificate, a niche and your own students. On the fixed rate platforms the pay is about US$9 to US$12 an hour, which is R149 to R198. With an adult specialism and private clients it can reach US$25 to US$40.

Is teaching English online worth it is the question we get most from two groups: South African graduates weighing a rand salary against dollar lessons from a spare room, and Americans wondering whether the side income the adverts promise survives contact with commission and the IRS. The honest answer depends on which platform, how many hours, what it costs to start and what you expect it to become, so this guide puts numbers on each of those rather than a verdict. Platform figures come from each company’s own tutor page on the dates shown and are converted at the European Central Bank reference rates of 6 November 2026. If the question underneath this one is which qualification to get, our guide to the best TEFL certification to teach English online compares the options platform by platform.

Key takeaways

  • Fifteen hours a week on a fixed rate platform such as Cambly is about US$660 a month (R10,900) before tax; the same hours at Ringle’s headline rate are about US$1,100 to US$1,430; the same hours at a tutor-set US$30 with your own clients are about US$1,950.
  • Starting costs are modest: a certificate, a headset, a webcam and a reliable connection, plus in South Africa a backup power supply, which the kit lists on our South Africa guides put at R800 to R8,000 depending on how much you need.
  • The costs that catch people are unpaid waiting time on by the minute platforms, marketplace commission of 15 to 33 percent, cancellations, currency fees and tax: a SARS return above R99,000 of taxable income, and a US Schedule SE above US$400 of net self employment income.
  • It is worth it for students, parents, career changers testing teaching before a move abroad, and anyone who wants dollar income without relocating; it is not worth it for anyone who needs a guaranteed salary next month.
  • The market has moved from children to adults since China closed its platforms to foreign tutors in 2021, and the adult, business and exam work is where the certificate pays for itself.
  • The single biggest lever on whether it is worth it is leaving the fixed rate tier, which takes a certificate, a specialism and a few months of reviews.

Is teaching English online worth it financially?

Teaching English online is worth it financially on the fixed rate platforms only as supplementary income, and it becomes worth it as a living when you set your own price for adult work and fill a timetable with regulars. The table turns the published rates into monthly figures at realistic hours, so you can see the gap between the tiers before you choose one. All figures are gross, before commission where it applies, tax and equipment.

What teaching English online pays per month at typical hours (published platform rates or typical tutor-set prices; 4.33 weeks a month; gross, before tax; rand at ECB reference rates of 6 November 2026; approximate)
Scenario Rate Hours a week Monthly, US dollars Monthly, rand Notes
Cambly adult conversation US$10.20 an hour on active minutes 15 about US$660 about R10,900 Published rate, 6 Nov 2026; waiting between calls is unpaid, so real hours are longer
NativeCamp, booked classes About US$9 per 25 minute class 15 (two classes an hour) about US$1,170 about R19,300 Published rate, 6 Nov 2026; assumes every slot booked, which new tutors rarely manage
Carrot Global, South African rate KRW 13,000 to 14,000 an hour 25, the minimum it asks for about US$1,040 to US$1,120 about R17,100 to R18,400 Listing of Aug 2026; degree and experience required; Korean peak hours
Ringle US$17 to US$22 an hour 15 about US$1,100 to US$1,430 about R18,200 to R23,600 Headline rate, 6 Nov 2026; recruits from leading universities
Preply, new tutor You set US$20; 33 percent commission 15 about US$870 kept about R14,400 Commission falls to 18 percent after 400 hours, lifting this to about US$1,065
Own clients, business or exam English Tutor-set US$30 15 about US$1,950 about R32,200 Typical tutor-set price, not a guarantee; takes a certificate, a niche and months of reviews

Read the table from the bottom up. The only row that looks like a salary is the one where you set the price and own the students, and the rows above it are the apprenticeship that gets you there. For a South African, R10,900 a month from Cambly is below what many graduate jobs pay but arrives in dollars from a spare room; R32,200 from private clients is a professional income in most of the country. For an American, US$660 a month is a car payment and US$1,950 is a rent cheque in much of the Midwest and South, but not on either coast. Our Hire Wire checks these published rates every fortnight, and only one platform in eight publishes one at all.

What does it cost to start teaching English online?

Austin, Texas skyline and bridge over the river, in a city where many Americans teach English online from home as a second income

It costs a certificate, a headset, a webcam and a connection that stays up, and in South Africa something to keep the lights on. A good USB headset and a 1080p webcam are a few hundred rand or under a hundred dollars together, and a laptop you already own will do. Cambly asks for 10 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up; Carrot Global wants a wired connection at 20 Mbps each way and a machine with 8 GB of RAM. Fibre covers that in any South African city and almost anywhere in the United States.

The South African extra is power. Load shedding has eased, but platforms penalise a dropped lesson whatever the cause, so most South African tutors run a small UPS for the router and laptop, which our guide to teaching English online in South Africa prices at roughly R800 to R1,200 for a mini UPS and R3,000 to R8,000 for an inverter setup. The certificate is the other upfront cost, and the right one depends on where you are heading: a 120-hour TEFL certificate for the schools and marketplaces, an Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma if adult, business or exam work is the plan. Current prices are on the course pages, and our breakdown of how much a TEFL course costs explains what moves them. Against the table above, a certificate pays for itself inside the first month or two on any platform except the lowest rung.

What are the hidden costs of teaching English online?

The hidden costs are unpaid time, commission, cancellations, currency fees and tax, and together they can take a quarter or more off the headline rate. Cambly pays for active minutes, so the gaps between calls are yours to absorb. Preply keeps all of a new student’s trial lesson and 33 percent of everything after until you have taught 400 hours. Late cancellations and no shows are paid on some platforms and not on others, and the terms change. Payments arrive by PayPal, Payoneer or Wise, each with a conversion spread, which for a South African tutor paid in dollars is a few percent on every withdrawal.

Then there is tax, which is not hidden but is often ignored. In South Africa, online teaching income is business income. For the 2027 year of assessment, which runs from 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027, no income tax is due below R99,000 of taxable income for anyone under 65, according to the SARS rates of tax for individuals; above that, a tutor earning from a foreign platform is normally a provisional taxpayer with returns due at the end of August and the end of February. In the United States, platforms treat tutors as independent contractors, so net earnings from self employment of US$400 or more mean filing Schedule SE and paying 15.3 percent self employment tax on top of income tax, with quarterly estimated payments once you expect to owe US$1,000 or more, as the IRS self employment tax page sets out. Half the self employment tax and your equipment are deductible. Budget for all of it before the first payout, and the headline rates in the table start to look like what they are: the top of the range, not the middle.

Who is teaching English online worth it for?

Jacaranda trees in bloom over a Pretoria street, in the city where many South African graduates start teaching English online from home

Teaching English online is worth it for people who value flexibility over a guaranteed salary, and for anyone who wants to be paid in dollars without leaving home. That covers more people than the adverts suggest. University students and recent graduates in South Africa, where a first graduate job can take a long time to arrive, can earn in dollars from a bedroom while they look. Parents can teach the Japanese evening between the school run and dinner. Americans with a day job can add a few hundred dollars a month from an Asian morning block before work. Retirees with a degree and a clear voice are exactly who Carrot Global and Ringle want.

It is especially worth it as a rehearsal. Teachers who plan to go abroad next year and start online this year arrive with a reference, a feel for learners from the country they are moving to and a demo lesson they have already given fifty times. Several of the platforms in this guide serve Korean and Japanese adults, and our guides to teaching English online to Korean students and teaching English online to Japanese students show how that rehearsal works for the two biggest in-country markets.

It is not worth it for someone who needs a dependable income from the first month, because bookings build slowly on every platform where students choose by profile. It is not worth it for a teacher in California, Massachusetts or New Jersey who was counting on Cambly, which does not allow tutoring from those states. And it is not worth it for anyone who hates early mornings and is on the US east coast, where the Asian evening falls before dawn.

Is the online English teaching market growing or shrinking?

The market is growing for adults and shrinking for the kind of work that made it famous. The boom years were built on Chinese children, and that ended in 2021 when China barred foreign tutors from teaching its school age pupils online; our guide to teaching English online to Chinese students explains what is still allowed. Since then the growth has been in adult conversation, business English and exam preparation across Japan, Korea, Europe and Latin America, which is the work in the tables above.

Two other shifts matter. Platforms have become choosier: Cambly’s own pages say it is temporarily limiting the number of new tutors to protect existing tutors’ schedules, which rewards applicants with a verifiable certificate and a specialism. And AI conversation tools now compete for the cheapest end of the market, the five minute chat with a patient stranger, which pushes the human work towards exactly the things software is bad at: diagnosing a learner’s real problem, coaching a presentation, marking an exam task against real criteria. If you were hoping to be paid for small talk, the market is shrinking. If you can teach, it is not.

How do you make teaching English online worth it?

You make it worth it by moving off the fixed rate tier as fast as you can, which means a certificate, a niche, your own students and packages instead of single lessons. The sequence works the same in Durban and Denver. Get a 120-hour certificate so the schools and marketplaces take you seriously, or the Level 5 TEFL Diploma if you already know business or exam English is the goal, because it sits on the Ofqual register where a corporate client can check it. Add a 30-hour specialism that names your students; our Specialist Course Bundle covers business English, IELTS preparation, young learners and teaching online. Spend three months on a marketplace building reviews in that niche. Then raise your price, offer packages and move your best students to regular slots.

Adults are where this pays, and our guide to teaching English online to adults sets out the platforms, the niches and the prices tutors actually set. The teachers who tell us online teaching was not worth it almost always stayed on the bottom rung; the ones who say it changed their lives almost always left it within a year.

Is a TEFL certificate worth it just for online teaching?

Yes, if you intend to earn more than the conversation platforms pay, because every platform and client above that tier either requires a certificate or pays more to the tutors who hold one. It is not necessary for a few hours a week on Cambly, and we say so. The wider cost and benefit case, including what a certificate does for jobs abroad, is in our honest look at whether TEFL is worth it, and the equipment, payment and platform setup is on our page about teaching English online.

Ready to find out whether it is worth it for you?

Start with the certificate the platforms recognise, pick one niche, and give it three months. The TEFL Institute Group is Europe’s largest TEFL trainer by teachers certified, with 161,000 teachers certified since 2017 who have gone on to teach in 80 countries, and every certificate carries a number a platform or a client can verify. If you want online teaching to be a real income rather than pocket money, the Level 5 Diploma is the one to choose.

It is worth it as a flexible second income, as a rehearsal before teaching abroad, or as a main income once you have a certificate, a niche and your own students. On fixed rate platforms the pay is about US$9 to US$12 an hour; with adult specialisms and private clients, tutors commonly set US$25 to US$40.

At fifteen hours a week, about US$660 (R10,900) on Cambly, about US$1,100 to US$1,430 at Ringle’s headline rate, about US$870 kept as a new Preply tutor charging US$20, and about US$1,950 (R32,200) with your own clients at US$30 an hour. All are gross, before tax, and the last one takes months of reviews to reach.

Unpaid waiting time on by the minute platforms, marketplace commission of 15 to 33 percent, unpaid cancellations, currency conversion spreads on PayPal, Payoneer or Wise, and tax. In South Africa a UPS or inverter for load shedding adds R800 to R8,000. Together these can take a quarter or more off the headline hourly rate.

It is growing for adults and shrinking for the children’s conversation work that made it famous. China barred foreign tutors from teaching its school age pupils online in 2021, platforms such as Cambly now limit new tutor intake, and AI tools compete for cheap small talk. Business English, exam preparation and adult conversation in Japan, Korea, Europe and Latin America are where demand is rising.
