If you want to be able to participate in the course, the only thing that you will need access to is a desktop computer. This is a prerequisite for teaching English as a foreign language in most places around the world, as you can’t really teach using a mobile phone, so it’s a good investment to make now.

Once you’ve made the decision to sign up to the course, you will be given access to 10 different modules, which will teach you everything you need to know about English as a foreign language. It takes roughly 6 months to complete the course we have designed. Generally speaking, you have access to 4 different options when it comes to your qualification. These are the main areas you can choose to focus on as a new teacher, and each one has different prerequisites and requirements. Let’s take a look at what you need to know.

Public Schools

Canada has a robust public education system, which requires teachers to have a degree and a teaching certificate in order to be able to get a job with them. This means that most qualified English teachers, especially those that have only just got their certification, will struggle to find a position at first. However, if you are committed to getting a degree and completing any other relevant training, there are opportunities available for you.

International Schools

The international school system is basically private education in Canada, which means that people are paying to send their kids to the school. Therefore, the quality of education is often very comprehensive and sometimes to a higher standard than a public education system. The quality is better and the demands placed on teachers are much higher. You will be expected to go above and beyond what is normally required, But the compensation package that is available often is much more lucrative than if you were a normal teacher.

If you can get a job teaching English as a foreign language in this type of setting, you can look forward to things like a higher salary and perks such as subsidised education. However, it will be tougher to get in

Language Schools

As a new TEFL teacher, you will discover that language schools are going to be your new best friend. They don’t require a degree to teach, and they can give you a job quite easily. Your students will mostly be adults who are trying to learn either basic English or business English as a second language to improve their job prospects.

However, it is worth keeping a few things in mind. You will not get a full-time contract, with most being 30 hours at best, and you will be expected to work evenings and weekends. However, this is a good opportunity to start your teaching career in the right way, and can be a good base for income.

If you don’t want to have an employer, then you can be self-employed and start your own tutoring business. Lots of new teachers find that tutoring is a good way to build up a solid reputation in the local community and also improve their monthly wage.

Obviously, you will be expected to report your earnings to the Canadian government, and you will be responsible for running your own business. However, it’s a profitable way to do things.

If you have a strong Internet connection, then you might want to consider teaching English online. Thanks to the increasing connectivity in the world, you can get a job teaching English from the other side of Canada if the opportunity is available.

Obviously, this does come with a few rules and conditions. First of all, you will have to have whatever qualifications are necessary to get the job if you choose to do so, and you will also be expected to plan and run your lessons with the minimal support. This isn’t for everybody, but if you can make it work for you, it is well worth doing.

When it comes to teaching English as a foreign language in Canada, you will need to get permission to do so. Applying for a permit will be a different process depending on your country of origin. You will either need to apply for a visa, or you will have to go through the electronic authorisation program for any country exempt from visa applications.

Canada decides who can apply for residency within the country by using points. As part of your application, you will create a profile. As you add skills and attributes, your profile will accumulate points. If you have enough points, then you can apply for residency. If you can speak French, then you will earn more points as this is a high demand language to speak.

Ottawa

As the capital city of Canada, Ottawa stands as a prime example of everything Canada has to offer. Everybody’s friendly, the views are good, and there’s plenty of opportunities. However, this is balanced out by a higher cost of living.

Montreal

As we are talking about Montréal, we would be remiss not to say how much of a great place it is to live and work. The great thing about Montréal is that it is very culturally diverse, so if you like interacting with people from other parts of the world, this is for you.

Toronto

Toronto is one of the most sustainable cities in Canada, and it’s a very nice place to live. There’s a lot here that you could learn to love, and it’s up to you to take a look at what’s available.

In a lot of respects, the salary that you make in Canada will be up to you. The career path that you choose will heavily influence how much you make each month. At the high end of the spectrum, a Canadian worker can make $4000 a month. However, this is balanced by the high cost of living that Canada is currently grappling with. Rent is more expensive in Canada than it is in the United Kingdom, which is worth keeping in mind.

It’s definitely up to you what you try to do to reduce the costs of living in Canada. You can try and supplement the amount of money you make each month by doing things like tutoring, and if you pick your location carefully, rent just outside the city limits can be more affordable.

Montréal can be an expensive place to live, and if you are looking for the unique culture that draws so many people to the city, then you’re going to have to pay for it. However, with that being said, you can keep costs down by taking advantage of public transport and living like a local. It is possible to save a little bit of money each month, and still live comfortably. However, you have to make sensible decisions with your wage to be able to do that.
