Public Schools
Well, France does have a public school sector, and technically you can apply for a job teaching in a public school. English is normally taught as a second or even third language, so it’s not like you couldn’t find work in the public sector, but it’s a little bit more complicated than moving to France and just starting to teach in a public school.
The problem with trying to teach English in a public school is that you’ve got a lot of rules that have to be followed. Because this is public education, the requirements that are put upon you are a lot greater than you might think. You have to be prepared to commit to getting a degree, and having a teaching qualification that is usually obtained specifically in France. It’s not as easy as some of the other options, but it’s definitely a career you could aim for.
International Schools
When it comes to private schools, they are like the upgrade to a public school. Because people have to pay to go to private school, the level of education that they get is often better, and the compensation available for staff is much better as a result. Private schools often have some of the best salaries available in the teaching world, and there’s plenty of opportunities to get extra benefits alongside a better wage. For example, some private schools give you a place to live or pay for your travel.
The problem comes in the form of the large list of qualifications that you have to have to get a job there. They only take the best teachers, and the ones with lots of experience, so if you are newly qualified, you might find that this becomes quite difficult. You will also be trying to compete with some of the best teachers in the country, so it’s definitely one of the harder goals to aim for, but it’s also really worth it if you can do it.
Language Schools
When new teachers ask us what they should be doing once they move to France, we often say that they should be looking for a job in a language school, and we really do recommend language schools as being the best place to start your career. Language schools are really good because you can do so much with them straight away, they have lower entry requirements than public schools or private schools, and they still offer all the benefits of being a teacher and earning a regular wage.
Your normal classroom will consist of older people, usually adults who are trying to learn English as a second or third language for work purposes. Business English in particular is very important in the corporate world, so if you can teach that, then you’ll have even more job opportunities. You will mostly be working on the weekend or in the evenings.
The only thing you should try and remember is that you will only normally get a part-time contract. This is usually about 30 hours a week, just because language schools don’t have full-time positions. However, there’s still plenty of job opportunities on offer.
Tutoring
If you need to make a bit of extra money, then we can definitely recommend that you look into tutoring. Tutoring is one of those things that you can do anywhere in the world, and there are definitely plenty of chances to make a good living.
Essentially, you start your own small business. You are responsible for deciding what you teach, when you teach it, and how much you charge. For a lot of people, this suits them down to the ground because it gives them the freedom to pick and choose how they live their lives and the way they work.
Obviously, as this is your business, you will have to record any money that you make and then pay taxes on it in accordance with the French government. However, it does give you that all important freedom, which for some people is everything.
