A Guide to TEFL in Grenoble, France

France is a beautiful part of Europe and it can offer quite a lot to any visitor. It has a diverse range of cities in many different settings, like, for example, Grenoble. As a city nestled in the mountains, this is a beautiful place where nature and society come together in harmony. It probably shouldn’t come as a great surprise to anybody that people like to set up shop here and build a life for themselves considering just how beautiful it is. However, if you wanted to start a new career as a TEFL teacher, what sort of things could you look forward to as you built your life? How easy would it be to start teaching?

The great thing about France is that, as it is often the case with most places in Europe, there is a growing TEFL presence. Nearly every education provider in the country, public or private, recognises the value of teaching English as a second language to students. This means that you have plenty of opportunities available to build a career teaching English as a second language, which is good for new teachers who want to enjoy the idyllic way of life available in France.

With a bit of hard work and a reliable plan in place, it’s not difficult for you to seek out the kind of career that you want. We are here to tell you everything you need to know about teaching English as a foreign language in France, what you will need to get started, and how we can help.

Finding TEFL Training for Teachers Living In Grenoble, France

The first step in your plan to move to France and teach English should be to get a qualification. If you don’t have any kind of teaching qualification, you’re not going to get a job anywhere. You need to learn to become a teacher and learn how to control the classroom, and these are all skills that require time and study. There are a few different options at your disposal, however we definitely recommend that you get your qualification before you move to France, because it’s a lot easier to apply for jobs going in than it is once you’ve gotten settled.

If you want to get the most from your studies, we recommend you go for an online course. This means that you can study wherever you are in the world, and you can access the course whenever you want. You don’t have to go to a school, and you don’t have to commit to a study schedule.

There are quite a few different qualifications out there, but the one that we recommend is our 120-hour accredited TEFL course. It’s got everything you could need to build a brand-new career.

The courses that we offer have a reputation all around the world for being high-quality and accessible to everybody. However, our 120-hour course is one of the most popular for both employers and students. The 120 hour course that we offer is designed to help you get into teaching quickly, because it gives you all of the knowledge and skills you need to teach English fairly quickly.

The whole course is 120 hours of study, and this has been recognised around the world as being the minimum amount of time that you need to be capable of teaching English as a foreign language.

During the course, you get a lot of tools that you can use to teach English anywhere in the world. We have done our best to make a qualification that you can use anywhere, not just in France.

We have done our best to make sure that the course is easy to do, so the only thing we are particularly looking for in terms of entry requirements would be a C1 level of proficiency in English. It would also be good if you had a device which could use the online platform, but all devices have either mobile data or Wi-Fi, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

We want to be a trusted service provider, so we are always looking for new tools that we can use to help give you the best experience. For example, we have a dedicated app. You can also use our website to verify your qualifications for prospective employers.

We wholeheartedly support people studying in whatever way works for them, because we understand that everybody learns differently. You’ve got ten modules to complete during your learning. Pretty straightforward, right? You can complete them however you’d like – be it written, audio or video content. After all, we know how important it can be for you to learn in a way that works for you, because everybody learns differently.

We have designed our course specifically to teach you all of the skills that you need to handle a classroom anywhere in the world. It’s not just France, we have built a course with universal applicability, so it’s pretty easy to get what you want, when you want it. That is part of the reason why we are so massively successful within the world of TEFL.

So, once you have successfully obtained your qualification, you will need to work out what you want to do with it. You will be pleased to know that you have quite a few different options at your disposal, so it’s pretty much up to you how you decide to build a career. However, let’s take a quick look at each of the main four options that you have, just so you know exactly what’s going on.

Public Schools

Well, France does have a public school sector, and technically you can apply for a job teaching in a public school. English is normally taught as a second or even third language, so it’s not like you couldn’t find work in the public sector, but it’s a little bit more complicated than moving to France and just starting to teach in a public school.

The problem with trying to teach English in a public school is that you’ve got a lot of rules that have to be followed. Because this is public education, the requirements that are put upon you are a lot greater than you might think. You have to be prepared to commit to getting a degree, and having a teaching qualification that is usually obtained specifically in France. It’s not as easy as some of the other options, but it’s definitely a career you could aim for.

International Schools

When it comes to private schools, they are like the upgrade to a public school. Because people have to pay to go to private school, the level of education that they get is often better, and the compensation available for staff is much better as a result. Private schools often have some of the best salaries available in the teaching world, and there’s plenty of opportunities to get extra benefits alongside a better wage. For example, some private schools give you a place to live or pay for your travel.

The problem comes in the form of the large list of qualifications that you have to have to get a job there. They only take the best teachers, and the ones with lots of experience, so if you are newly qualified, you might find that this becomes quite difficult. You will also be trying to compete with some of the best teachers in the country, so it’s definitely one of the harder goals to aim for, but it’s also really worth it if you can do it.

Language Schools

When new teachers ask us what they should be doing once they move to France, we often say that they should be looking for a job in a language school, and we really do recommend language schools as being the best place to start your career. Language schools are really good because you can do so much with them straight away, they have lower entry requirements than public schools or private schools, and they still offer all the benefits of being a teacher and earning a regular wage.

Your normal classroom will consist of older people, usually adults who are trying to learn English as a second or third language for work purposes. Business English in particular is very important in the corporate world, so if you can teach that, then you’ll have even more job opportunities. You will mostly be working on the weekend or in the evenings.

The only thing you should try and remember is that you will only normally get a part-time contract. This is usually about 30 hours a week, just because language schools don’t have full-time positions. However, there’s still plenty of job opportunities on offer.

Tutoring

If you need to make a bit of extra money, then we can definitely recommend that you look into tutoring. Tutoring is one of those things that you can do anywhere in the world, and there are definitely plenty of chances to make a good living.

Essentially, you start your own small business. You are responsible for deciding what you teach, when you teach it, and how much you charge. For a lot of people, this suits them down to the ground because it gives them the freedom to pick and choose how they live their lives and the way they work.

Obviously, as this is your business, you will have to record any money that you make and then pay taxes on it in accordance with the French government. However, it does give you that all important freedom, which for some people is everything.

Lots of people look at teaching English online from France. It’s a good idea if you don’t want to be restricted geographically but just want to live in France. The thing that people have to keep in mind is that you essentially run a tutoring business on the web. Sometimes you can get remote jobs, but most of the time you’ll be doing freelance tutoring. If this is something that appeals to you, then definitely give it a go.

Teaching English in France isn’t very difficult because Europe is quite straightforward when moving around. Most of the time, you just have to get a permit to be able to work in France, and then you apply to live there permanently later on. Obviously, the rules won’t be the same for everybody, so make sure that you do think about the specific rules you will have to follow for your country.

Grenoble

Grenoble is known for being one of the most beautiful parts of France just because of where it is situated. You can live happily in the mountains and just enjoy life. However, it’s still a pretty modern place so you’re not going to get left behind.

Paris

Paris is the capital of France, and it’s the place to go if you want to experience quintessential French culture. Tourists love it, the locals love it, and you probably will too, so it’s worth visiting.

The amount of money that you earn as a new TEFL teacher will vary quite a bit. It’s all down to your skills and qualifications. The better the job you can get, then the better your career will go. With that in mind, it’s basically up to you to decide how much you want to earn. The average salary for somebody in France is about €2000 a month.

France is currently dealing with a cost-of-living spike, and is about 5% more expensive than England right now. However, that’s not to say that you can’t enjoy a good standard of life on a normal teaching salary. Just don’t spend unnecessarily and try to live locally. It’s a good way to acclimate at the same time as keeping costs down.

  • Salary: €2000
  • Average Rent: €900
  • Utilities: €190
  • Public Transport Pass: €80
  • Milk: €1.50
  • Bread: €1.80
