As the 2nd largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia has attracted settlers as far back as 6000 BC, allowing a unique culture to thrive on the island. By the time the Phoenicians began visiting Sardinia in 1000 BC, several indigenous tribes already existed on the island. Over the ensuing centuries, Sardinia was conquered and reconquered, ruled by the Romans, the Vandals, the Byzantines, the Sicilians, the Spanish, and the Italians in turn.
Our course is held in the coastal town of Alghero, which is located at the northwestern tip of Sardinia. Alghero is an old port city important to the Catalans. In fact, the Algheresi still speak a distinctive Catalan-influenced dialect of Italian, with Catalan declared an official language for good measure. The Catalan city walls built in the 16th century still line the rocky coast of the old town, with winding streets and narrow lanes still packed with cafes, shops, bars, and restaurants.
While in Alghero, take advantage of the perfect, sunny weather, white sand beaches, and crystal clear sea. Be sure to take a trip to the famous Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune’s Grotto), a stunning system of sea cave complexes, accessible by a narrow 654-step staircase cut into the cliffs. Enjoy the city’s famous seafood and traditional Sardinian dishes such as malloreddu (shell-pasta with a tomato sausage ragu) or crema catalana (a sweet crème brûlèe dish). Top off your meal with a pairing of local wines, and finish with mirto, a liqueur distilled from myrtle berries.
The School
TEFL Institute’s Sardinia campus is located in the historic port of Alghero. Our school is equipped with air-conditioned classrooms, a library of ESL teaching materials, computers, printers, photocopier, and audio-visual equipment.
To help ease you into Italian life, we offer cultural and Italian language courses to our students for a fee. Some examples of past courses include a yoga retreat and a water sports course.
Housing
The most popular housing option is a shared room in a shared apartment with classmates (€400/month). Private rooms are also available for an additional fee, and it is also possible to arrange a family home stay. All housing is subject to availability, so be sure to contact TEFL Institute as soon as possible with your preference.
Transportation
Flights are available directly to Alghero, Cagliari, and Olbia from select Italian and European cities. The island is also accessible by ferry from Genoa, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Palermo, Naples and several other Italian ports. Once in Alghero, take advantage of the city’s tourist office and pick up maps of their extensive—and affordable—bus lines.
Climate
Alghero enjoys a typical coastal Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cool, damp winters. Considered the sunniest spot in Italy, visitors can usually expect to spend a pleasant day at the beach from April through early October, with November and December being the most-rainy times of the year.
