TEFL Institute and the China TEFL Network of Zhejiang University have partnered to offer this summer program. The program is geared to college students and college graduates who would like to spend the summer in China. In this program you will receive total immersion in the culture, language, and customs of the country.
You will work as a volunteer English instructor working mostly in the small villages and towns throughout southern China. Instructors can expect to teach English about 20 to 25 hours each week plus spend 10 to 15 hours on activities outside of the classroom. You will teach middle school students with ages 12 to 18 or adult teachers aged 25 to 35.
You receive:
This is a continuing partnership with China TEFL through Zhejiang University. The program begins in Chicago for a weekend kickoff that includes TEFL training and cultural workshops conducted by the staff of TEFL Institute. On Sunday, the group will depart together on a flight to Shanghai, China. Upon arrival they will be met by representatives of the China TEFL and transported by bus to Hangzhou, China. Hangzhou is about a two to three hour bus ride south of Shanghai. For the next three to four days, you will attend training sessions and cultural tours conducted by members of the "China TEFL" project in Hangzhou, China.
Your accommodations are all covered throughout this program. Once your training is completed in Hangzhou, you will go to your host town or village. Housing is provided in the form of a shared apartment or in dormitory housing. Your school will provide you with a small monthly stipend of about 3000 RMB to cover the cost of personal items. Friends or groups may elect to teach in the same area together whenever possible. In addition, we are able to accommodate those who seek shorter stays in China with proper notice.
For the next five-to-six weeks you will live, work, and teach English in China. There will be ample time to sightsee and connect with other volunteers around the area. You will teach Monday through Friday and some Saturdays in the program but Sundays are always off.
Finally, everyone will return to Shanghai by the weekend of August 23rd or 24th. Most will return to the USA, some will stay to travel, and others may choose to go on and teach English in other countries with the assistance of TEFL Institute. Last year, many of the teachers traveled after the program ended to Beijing and Shanghai to sightsee.
In this program you are responsible for your airfare, program fee, and incidentals. Most other costs are covered either by TEFL Institute or the China TEFL through the Zhejiang University Network.
